I believe the most crucial aspect of tutoring is creating an environment where students feel supported and equipped with effective learning methods. A tutor's role extends beyond passing knowledge; it involves understanding each student's unique learning style. By tailoring teaching strategies to individual needs, a tutor can instill a passion for…

From personal experience, I have had a few unfair and unsatisfactory experiences with tutors throughout my schooling journey. As a result, I have learnt from those experiences and structured my services in regards to having the student as the main focus. As a tutor, the most important thing I can do is explain and walk a student through unfamiliar…

I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. I have (as told to me by all my ever-suffering associates) a 'wild' vocabulary, and for English…

A tutor can improve one's overall understand of the subject, not just a specific understanding about a material. That is important because it is building the bigger picture of each subject in the long term. I am flexible in my teaching method, and I am able to adjust to each student depending on what they…

According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

Apart from enhancing their knowledge, she enhances the student's social skills, their problem solving abilities and prepares them for tackling real life problems. Through face to…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. My experience as a tennis coach has shown me how different students learn at…

Being able to help a student achieve future problems on their own by helping them understand how to do a problem rather than just providing the solution is one of the most important things I consider a tutor can do for a student. I also think it's important to be prepared to help them with their topics by preparing first myself. I believe my…

A tutor must be patient, flexible, honest and attentive. It is important that tutors do not give students the answer directly but allows the student to discover the answer with extra guidance. The ultimate goal of tutoring is to help students become independent learners. A tutor must be willing to adapt to different situations and learning…

I think that being able to build a rapport with the student is one of the fundamental skills to be a good tutor. This lays the foundation for the student being comfortable in asking questions to the tutor, as well as the tutor finding a teaching style that is most suited to the student. I believe that teaching is not about pumping a student with exam papers or to make them memorise the answers and get good grades, for my satisfaction. But about really making sure the student understands a concept, so that they have a strong foundation and can apply to it many different question styles. This will actively stimulate creativity and…

At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. By instilling theses skill and habits the student can then move forward through higher education or an apprenticeship…

Inside Lower MitchamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Harry worked through solving probability problems using Venn diagrams and tree diagrams, including events without replacement.

In Year 10, Olivia practised quadratic graphing by finding x- and y-intercepts and the turning point for different equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben focused on the basics of differentiation, tackling first principles as well as applying product, quotient, and chain rules to various functions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, unclear working and untidy formatting ("needs to work on making formatting of questions clearer for examiner") led to errors compounding across multi-step calculus problems.

For a Year 10 science assignment, not gathering resources ahead of lessons meant lost time setting up instead of discussing ideas.

A Year 8 student's over-reliance on mimicking previous solutions in algebra caused repeated sign errors—"relies on previous problems' structure and copying it down."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student often added when multiplication was required, particularly with larger numbers, resulting in confusion during worded perimeter tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Lower Mitcham tutor noticed a real change in a Year 11 student who, after struggling to connect chemistry assignments with class content, started referencing articles independently and wrote significant parts of each paragraph without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step guidance began tackling her maths homework solo—she finished most questions on her own and only asked for help with the trickiest two.

In primary sessions, Sarah used to hesitate when multiplying large numbers but now works through them with much less prompting and greater independence.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mitcham Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Scotch College - Torrens Park Campus.
