It is important to help students to organize studies by preparing a timetable. Tutors should create awareness in students that why they are learning particular subject and importance of that subject so that they can concentrate better. I feel I can make students feel very comfortable with the subjects and encourage them to go beyond. I use the…

- A tutor needs to be able to guide the students into considering the application of what they are learning and being able to provide them with the support that they need. A tutor can also provide students with emotional support as sometimes it is difficult for students to deal with the balance between life and studying. - Strong listening -…

I would say that the most important things I can do as a tutor are to be an inspiration for my student as someone who genuinely enjoys the subject, and prove that it is really possible to do well in a topic. Being such a role model and delivering the content in an interesting way are pivotal to being a great tutor and mentor. A patient and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them confidence and reassurance that they are more than capable in what they are undergoing. Whether this may be through giving them your knowledge or talking them through other problem such as how to study ect. To entirely concentrate on how smart you are and your subject…

Being able to adapt to the students study style, mentality and the way they operate. My greatest strength as a tutor is being able to break down hard topics into very easy and bite sized pieces. This is because, the way I learn myself is trying to fully understand a topic by being able to explain it someone…

The most important thing for a tutor is their ability to be patient and encouraging. Being knowledgeable alone isn't sufficient, as they should also have the personality traits to be a good teacher. Additionally, tutors need to cater their teaching to match the needs of each student to achieve the best outcomes possible. The tutor should maintain…

A tutor can listen to the student before giving advice or teaching. Listening is important as it allows a tutor to understand why the student may be having difficulties grasping subjects or topics and choose alternative strategies to help the student. Explaining a topic over and over again often doesn't work and a tutor needs to be open to hearing…

In order for students to learn to the best of their ability, a tutor needs to create a safe space for them to make mistakes. I believe that the most valuable way to learn is through making mistakes. I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is remove the fear around a subject. For many students, especially in maths and science, the volume of information can be overwhelming. The most important thing a tutor can do is adjust their teaching methods and style based on each student. Teaching with only one style and using the same methods for everyone won't work, and if you can't adjust, your sessions becomes very robotic and boring. Being patient with the student is very important because it may take time for them to grasp new topics and understand the method to solve a problem. As a tutor you have to walk the student through this process and be supportive and calm instead of getting upset or blunt with the student because this may affect their self confidence and focus. I…

Vee, Lynbrook

Inside LynbrookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aryan focused on solving linear equations and reviewing how to substitute values into algebraic expressions.

Year 8 student Emily practised working with percentages, including converting between decimals and percentages, as well as calculating profit and loss using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Mina worked on double-digit multiplication and consolidating addition skills for sums greater than ten.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled to consistently check for sign errors when working with algebraic symbols; as a tutor noted, "misinterpreting symbols mid-way led to the wrong solution," meaning time was lost retracing steps rather than building new skills.

In Year 8 geometry, confusion between co-interior and complementary angles left one student uncertain about which strategy to apply—double-checking which angle type was needed became essential but sometimes overlooked under pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner's times tables recall slowed down long division, requiring repeated reminders before moving forward with calculations. The frustration was visible in pauses and sighs as answers slipped just out of reach.

Recent Achievements

A Lynbrook tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rush through algebra problems now taking the time to double-check each step and catch her own errors, something she hadn't done before.

In a recent Year 8 session, a student who was hesitant about worded perimeter and area questions managed to break down complex problems independently after learning new techniques for solving equations.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously counted on fingers for sums above ten can now add numbers up to twenty in his head without pausing or needing prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hampton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lynbrook Primary School.
