It is being able to relate to students who struggle and find a way that works for them, not necessarily a way that only works for me. In my experience, a student needs a maths tutor willing to adapt to their needs. A tutor can always keep track of their student's progress and help them achieve their goals. We are helping students achieve their…

The things i consider important between a maths tutor and a student are understanding, listening to each other and finding ways around to help the student understand concepts better, working with different techniques with different students and most importantly, fostering independance. Foster independance is really important because it allows them…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a maths tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. I also believe that showing my students I'm not always right is a good skill to teach (mostly these mistakes are unintentional). It is the manner in which one amends one's…

Tutoring can give personalized instruction that meet their personal needs. In addition, the tutor can build a better relationship with the student and parents rather than in-school environment, where teachers need to take care of around 20 students, not focus on personal needs. Finally, a maths tutor can give feedback effectively to students, help…

To listen. Being able to understand the holes in a student's learning, as well as understand what methods would be most effective in helping them gain a new understanding is how both I as a maths tutor and my student can succeed in what we aim to achieve. There is also effective comprehension: a tutor should be clear, concise, and able to tailor…

Some of the things I consider to be most important when tutoring are listening to the student to really understand what they are finding difficult, encouraging the student to persevere and not give up on themselves, and most importantly, finding a range of methods and techniques to use when tutoring. Every student learns in a different way and it…

Be friendly to the student, show the student that they are confident in them, allow the student to think for him/herself. A tutor should make the student understand the importance of anything they teach the student ,and make sure the student has grasped the concept in the most simplest way to the student. A tutor should understand that each…

For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is create an environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Additionally, it is also important to keep students accountable and make sure they are up to date. One of my biggest strengths is that I’ve just come out of VCE myself, so the content,…

It is important to help students to organize studies by preparing a timetable. I feel I can make students feel very comfortable with the subjects and encourage them to go beyond. I use the…

- A tutor needs to be able to guide the students into considering the application of what they are learning and being able to provide them with the support that they need. A tutor can also provide students with emotional support as sometimes it is difficult for students to deal with the balance between life and studying. - Strong listening -…

I believe one of the most important things a maths tutor can do is remove the fear around a subject. For many students, especially in maths and science, the volume of information can be overwhelming. The most important thing a maths tutor can do is adjust their teaching methods and style based on each student. Teaching with only one style and using the same methods for everyone won't work, and if you can't adjust, your sessions becomes very robotic and boring. I consider empathy and genuine regard for the student and his/her learning experience as most important. While it is true that we could be highly skilled in the subject matter or content area, without genuine regard for the students teaching them might simply be mechanical and without connection. Inside LyndhurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jay worked on measurement skills and multiplying/dividing by multiples of 10, often using visual examples.

For Year 10, Chloe revised sine and cosine rule applications in trigonometry and practiced Pythagoras' theorem in three dimensions with guided problem sets.

In Year 11, Nathan tackled empirical formula calculations from molar ratios in chemistry and reviewed redox reactions by stepping through sample questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on matrix multiplication and trigonometry often left questions unfinished when stuck, as a tutor noted: needs to persist more with approaching problems and not give up too soon.

In Year 10 algebra sessions, skipping written steps meant sign errors in solving equations were hard to catch.

Another session revealed a Year 9 student forgetting to bring calculators or notes home, making it difficult to practice new skills independently.

Meanwhile, a primary student focusing only on times tables found that missing regular revision at home led to slower recall during lessons.

Recent Achievements

In Lyndhurst, a Year 10 student who used to stay quiet now actively asks for help when stuck on equations and applies what they've learned straight away, a big shift from earlier sessions.

In Year 12 Chemistry, another student recently researched independently using both their textbook and online sources before attempting questions—something they previously avoided without direct prompting.

A younger primary school student has begun tackling three-digit subtraction problems with fewer prompts and double-checks their own answers instead of waiting for the tutor's cue. Last session, they completed all three sums correctly on their own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hampton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lyndhurst Primary School.
