Tutoring is essentially an aid for student's learning in schools. The most important thing that a tutor can do is to ignite students' passion for learning. This can be acheived through helping them with questions and concepts that they find confusing, guiding them to develop their own problem solving strategies and most importantly growing their…

Make a student feel comfortable with their learning process, transmit reliability and proximity at the same time, pay attention to every detail that could be asked or not solved. I consider that the emotional aspect has to be addressed in order to strengthen a better understanding and a more solid knowledge. Patience, rigor, implication and…

A good tutor will help students develop the problem-solving skills necessary so that they are confident in their abilities when faced with a difficult question outside the session. A tutor should be there to guide the student towards their own conclusions, whilst ensuring all gaps in understanding are filled. Importantly, a tutor must provide a…

The most important is the capacity for the tutor to engage with a student closely, and altering their mindset to or around mathematics. This may be making them enjoy the subject more, approaching with a more efficient way of thinking to certain exam problems (especially so that it suits the student' learning method), or even just helping them feel…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to engage the student in a way which makes them want to keep learning that specific subject if not fall in love with it. At the end of the day motivation must come from the student themself and as a tutor I believe it is my job to help the student find that motivation. I believe my…

I personally believe that for a tutor to be effective, they have to be willing to listen to, and learn from, the individual that they are working with. There is always more than one way to teach a specific skill, and, as a result of this, it is important to work together to find the most effective methods. I think that it is important to foster an…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to have trust in, and give confidence to their student to help them reach their potential. Tutors should be supportive towards their students and do their best to answer any questions the student may have and provide resources to help them with their learning. I believe my main strength would be active…

Inside Machans BeachTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Layla focused on converting between analogue and digital clocks as well as practising subtraction with decimals and three-digit multiplication.

For Year 8, Eve tackled solving algebraic equations—including forming her own—and worked through complex word problems involving ratios and percentages.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophia revised the application of index laws using homework questions from school, and practised simplifying surds and expressions under square roots.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not bring required materials and lost a homework sheet, resulting in lesson time spent retracing old work instead of learning new concepts—"we had to go through the previous worksheet again."

In Year 10, another student's algebra assignment showed "a few minor changes were made to formatting and interpretation," indicating difficulty with presenting clear working.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student skipped assigned homework multiple times, leading to missed practice on BODMAS and percentages; this meant errors persisted across sessions and confidence lagged during more complex questions. The sense of unfinished business lingered at each week's start.

Recent Achievements

A Machans Beach tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who used to wait for step-by-step guidance start applying feedback right away, editing her assignment independently after discussing suggestions.

In another session, a Year 9 student brought in extra practice problems she'd found herself and tackled them with minimal prompting—something she hadn't attempted before.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students (Year 4) stayed focused through the whole lesson for the first time this term and completed all subtraction questions with only occasional help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stratford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Machans Beach State School.
