I believe a tutor's role goes beyond teaching; it involves actively supporting students, understanding their perspectives, and identifying the challenges they face in order to guide them effectively. I have three months of experience as an English tutor in Vietnam and one year as a Lead Instructor for a junior engineering program in Sydney, where…

As a tutor, firstly, I would like my students to understand that making mistakes is normal and part of the learning process. Making mistakes helps them understand the subject material in greater depth. Secondly, I would like to make learning a fun and easy experience for students and give them the tools to work through seemingly challenging tasks…

Provide them with confidence: with my own experience in the subjects myself, I can show them the path they can follow to improve their marks, the advice I can give as an expert giving them encouragement that things are not hopeless, and that success is tangible. Teach them how to think, not parrot: I learnt myself in highschool english, my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to spark an interest in the subject which can lead to the students learning new things about the subject on their own. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to be reliable, knowledgable and help the student reach and exceed their expectations. Also to be able to teach content in a way that makes learning fun and enjoyable is critical to a student's learning capacity. A tutor can provide the pathway of learning. The tutor should understand the position of his/her students. Significantly, the tutor helps to form a strong foundation which helps students to achieve the goals. Basically, teaching is an art. I prefer doing teaching in a simple way. Students can learn better if subjects material is divided into…

For me, I consider giving them the knowledge and confidence to be able to step out of their comfort zone to achieve something previously unachievable the most important thing. Sometimes, a tutor is a guiding mentor, you provide them with stories, knowledge and experience. Then, the student would be able to utilize that knowledge and build a good…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

There are 2 things that are most important. First is to help the students develop a thought process instead of just coming up with answers. An independent thought process can help the student a lot in the future as well. And second, beyond passing exams, the tutor’s job is to ignite an interest in the subject so the student wants to keep…

I feel it is to build their confidence in the subject, making them believe that they can do it! Another thing is, a tutor should create a safe space for the student to ask questions. 1. Give them a correct perspective 2. Encourage them to do better and try things, even if they do wrong they should be. That's how they will learn from mistakes and excel. I think I focus on basics, and can see from the perspective of a student. What the student wants and how the students wants is something I think can gauge…

Inside Macquarie ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zara focused on place value and rounding to tens and hundreds, then practiced addition strategies for multi-digit numbers.

In Year 8, Daniel worked through surface area of cylinders, applying the formula in worded scenarios and reviewing volume calculations for a range of 3D shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily tackled trigonometric ratios with bearings and solved angles of elevation and depression questions using diagrams to visualise real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in algebra needed reminders to show working, especially when forming equations—needs to start independently form equation of question for which a revision test is scheduled for next class.

In Year 11, time management emerged as an obstacle during exam strategies; planning responses more efficiently was discussed after rushed answers cost marks.

For a Year 6 geometry assessment, "test score 18.5/40" reflected gaps in both content and exam confidence.

One Year 7 learner hesitated to attempt questions due to fear of mistakes, leading to less written practice and slower improvement each session.

Recent Achievements

A Macquarie Park tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for clarification, now actively seeks help when stuck on trigonometry problems—this shift has led her to solve more complex questions independently.

In another session, a Year 9 student who struggled with quadratic equations last term managed to work through several examples without errors and even identified areas he wanted extra practice in.

For a younger learner in Year 3, reading aloud became smoother; she now tackles unfamiliar words by sounding them out instead of skipping over them, finishing her first storybook without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaumont Road Public School.
