I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. You succeed when you are no longer needed. I am a student and understand very well the issues students face when doing sums and exams. I believe I have mastered…

The most important thing as a tutor is to realise that you yourself is also learning, and you should not place yourself as a superior. As a tutor, yes you have the knowledge and your job is to teach that knowledge to your student - yet this is not an invitation to feel superior. As a tutor, you are there to guide them not dictate them. At the end…

With constant practice and drilling, students will be more comfortable doing the questions themselves and be confident in the…

The most important thing is for a tutor to understand a student's preferences and what sort of teaching style would suit them. Different people have different learning suitabilities. Thus, a tutor should be able to adapt to suit the student's learning cues. My biggest strengths would be patience, determination, and the willingness to go above and…

It is important tutors: - When possible, teach the material in a way that allows students to 'see the forest through the trees' in order for them to more effectively engage in the important details. - Teach in a way that allows for active, intuitive learning, rather than passive rote memorization. - Make students feel like they are part of a…

A tutor can help improve a student in academic success. In a classroom setting a teacher has to cover a specific amount of content within a particular time period, some students can pick up the content very easily while others may lag behind on the content. A tutor however solves this issue by understanding the student's strengths and weaknesses…

I believe that a tutor is not merely someone who helps students to better understand certain materials taught at school. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to simplify difficult concepts, to allow them to make mistakes, and to teach them to do a task independently. Once a tutor identifies what a student struggles with, the tutor must help the student make sense of the concept. Aside from this, the tutor must make the student feel safe when it…

Since the tutor acts as a role model for the student, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take this opportunity to act as a mentor. By taking this role on board, the dynamic increases and the tutor can effectively teach. My greatest strength is patience and empathy. I have noticed the smartest tutors are not the best tutors. Inside MalabarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas worked through multiplication and division of fractions as well as applying their understanding to perimeter and area in geometry using visual examples.

In Year 8, Sophie focused on solving inequalities and graphing them on number lines, then expanded her skills by practicing shortcuts for multiplying fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James tackled trigonometry concepts alongside bivariate data analysis, with targeted exam prep questions to reinforce application and interpretation of results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's written work was flagged as needing clearer setting out—"Setting out still needs work"—making it harder to catch errors in multi-step maths.

For a Year 10 English task, last-minute communication meant the tutor only learned about an assessment deadline on the day it was due; as noted, "Student has unfortunately relayed information that their assessment was due that very day."

In senior maths (Year 12), anxiety and lack of confidence led to hesitancy in tackling new topics, which left the student feeling overwhelmed rather than progressing steadily through compound interest questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malabar noted that a Year 9 student, who previously hesitated to ask for clarification, is now openly seeking help when confused and has started correcting mistakes independently after feedback.

In a recent high school session, one student showed new independence by recalling formulas from memory and successfully applying them to solve equations without prompts—last term, this same student struggled with remembering steps.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who once rushed through mental maths tasks now takes time to set out work logically and checks each answer before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Sports High School.
