Confidence! Making children feel safe and confident is the most important thing a tutor can do for students. When a child feels safe with you and able to be their true self, they will engage more with learning and exceed all expectations. I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I am smart, young and very well spoken. I speak from a place of confidence and can be very entertaining for kids/youth. I would like to think I am quite…

To be an effective tutor, creating a positive learning environment and building connection with the student is crucial. Tutors should be adaptable and tailor their approach to the student's learning style. Constructive feedback is necessary to help students stay motivated and progress toward their goals. I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. I believe that learning is an exponential process, so a small victory in a tutoring session can lead to enormous benefits in the student's future. I am passionate about enabling students to maximise their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them understand the concepts being taught. The right answer for a particular question isn't as important as getting the fundamentals right so they can be applied in all circumstances. My strengths would include: I truly understand what I'm trying to teach them and in turn I can explain…

The most important things a tutor can do are to create a safe, encouraging learning environment, help students build confidence, and guide them to develop their own problem-solving skills rather than just giving them answers. I’m patient, a good listener, and I always try to explain things in a way that makes sense to each individual student. I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable learning the material the school gives them and to develop good study skills. Students have different learning styles and process information at different paces. A school can't accomodate all the individual learning styles of their students, but tutoring…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to really help them get the best out of themselves. I think my…

A tutor should be able to provide necessary learning resources for students, feedback and encouragement. Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
