In my opinion, the most important thing a private tutor can do for a student is give them the opportunity to make mistakes in a safe environment where they feel they won't be judged. Building confidence and supporting students to increase their self-esteem won't only help them in their school subjects, but is a valuable skill that will last them a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn in a way that maximises their potential. Everyone learns in a different way and I believe a tutor can find what is best for the individual. A tutor needs to be able to teach a student to be able to independently work through challenges. Whilst someone who has…

Listen to the student. I think it's important that tutors listen to their students to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and get to know them. By doing this, you'll be able to help them in the way that works best for them, in the areas that they're struggling with the most. Sometimes there are things outside of schoolwork that make it hard…

A tutor should always strive to cater to the students needs. Many students have different aspirations, attitudes and interests. A tutor should be able to analyse the situation and adjust his/her teaching methods accordingly. I am passionate, energetic, motivated and organised. I always prepare the content required, a day before each students…

I believe in the importance of developing a student's own independent thinking skills, so that they gather the confidence to correctly respond to any problem that an exam or test may pose individually as I, the tutor, will not be there to help in assessments. By doing this, the student can cement beneficial study habits and obtain their academic…

The most important thing tutors can do for a student is to just be there for the student and give their students the motivation and encouragement to work, having a tutor myself those were the things that assisted me in achieving my scores. This kind of motivation and encouragement can then build into other parts of the student's life thus…

Simply reaching out. Most students find it intimidating to ask for help. Reaching out and letting them know they can communicate whether it is regarding their studies or not. And listen respectfully when they do reach out. I hold substantial subject knowledge of mathematics, allowing me to explain topics with clarity. I am able to communicate…

A tutor needs to be able to clearly communicate with the student with their studies. There is little meaning if tutors do nut put in the effort to understand how the students think when they're studying. I have had experience in informal tutoring during high school. With clarity and great cohesion I was able to teach younger students how to…

I think tutors need to be able to diagnose the cause of why a student does not understand something, so good communication skills are essential. However, having a good enough understanding of the content to be able to explain it in multiple ways is also a critical skill, whether that be graphically, numerically, with an analogy, or in several…

IN MY VIEW, JUST AS IT IS NECESSARY FOR THE DOCTOR FIRST TO DIAGNOSE THE PATIENT'S ILLNESS, SO IT IS EQUALLY NECESSARY FOR THE TEACHER TO DIAGNOSE THE STUDENT'S WEAKNESS AND DIFFICULTIES, FIRST! SO HAVING CONDUCTED A NEEDS ANALYSIS, THEN THE TUTOR SHOULD OPT FOR THE MOST APPROPRIATE APPROACH TO REMOVE THE STUDENT'S WEAKNESSES AND PROBLEMATIC…

Give the student the confidence they need to do well by providing them with tools and knowledge that they can use to succeed. I think it's really important that students are given confidence in their abilities and a sense of pride in their learning. Students are capable of learning anything, it's the role of the tutor to show them that they are! In terms of mathematics I think it's very important that tutors give students a wealth of techniques which they can employ…

A tutor’s most important responsibilities are to make learning clear, personalised, and encouraging. Understanding a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style is essential. To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. In short, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be for tutors to ensure that students are confident in how they approach a problem. My strengths as a tutor, I would say,…

Moreover, being flexible with timings can also be very important for a student as they will be focusing on other subjects as well.…

Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
