Don’t make students memorize, make them understand it in their own way. A lot of the topics that are taught can actually be related to previous topics. If they can see that connection between each topic, then understanding tends to become easier. Also, we shouldn’t put too much pressure on them. That means don’t explain too quickly, but…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as both an academic and emotional mentor to alleviate some of the stress that comes with studying. Naturally, it is expected for tutors to help students with breaking down the content into manageable concepts for the student to understand. However, aspects such as study…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. Having being tutored myself, I didn't respond as well with someone who could not meet me at my level than I did with a tutor who I felt I could relate to and trust. I am calm and caring, which I think is really important in tutoring, especially when…

Be calm and understand that everyone thinks different, and just because you or another students gets it, the other student could struggle with it. Also find the particular concept or idea that a student cannot connect. Moreover, to track their process and be sure to work on their mistakes continuously. I worked in a tutoring center this year,…

I think the most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is make sure they not only know but actually understand the content, like having knowledge on a deeper meaning, so in a test if you face a nuanced question, you are able to solve it due to your in-depth understanding of the content. I was tutored in highschool which has allowed me to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is awaken curiosity and interest in the student. With no urge to ask questions and absorb knowledge, learning would become a challenging task for both the teacher and the student. My strengths as a tutor come from my ability to empathise and understand my students. Possessing a bachelor's…

Someone once told me a great teacher is not a messiah but a guide. As a tutor, I do not gift my mentees the treasure of knowledge but rather act as a guide toward achieving them. I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for their students in the limited time that they have is to show them how to study on their own and succeed even…

Allow the student to discover rather than memorise - I understand that subjects such as Maths can feel overwhelming if given as rote learning. Instead, allowing the students to discover the content for themselves not only helps with retaining information, but can make learning fun! Being a role model and mentor to the student, both academically and in life. By helping them develop their skills in the subject area, a tutor models approaches to thinking, problem solving and one's attitude towards learning. I think a tutor should empower students to think for themselves, as this is what is required for the student to succeed independently when taking exams. So the most important thing I could do as a tutor is to encourage students to work out answers rather than giving it to them immediately. I pride myself on being patient. I believe strongly that…

Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. Very closely tied to this is the building of the student, edifying the student if you…

A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. Teach the student how to learn. Each student has the capability to learn the HSC curriculum at a high level but does not know how to approach it effectively. If I can indirectly teach the student how to properly approach mathematics while teaching him/her the questions, then I have succeeded. 1. Understanding the way the student has thought…

Jason has been to our home 3 times now and we could not be more pleased. He is a very polite respectful young guy. More importantly Matthew really likes him and says is he is really helping him. Jason said today that he could see improvement. More than happy to continue.

Inside Manly ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zara focused on understanding time calculations with hours, minutes, and seconds.

In Year 9, Ethan tackled volumes of prisms—especially cylinders and triangular prisms—and applied Pythagoras' theorem to solve for unknown sides.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Lucy worked through differentiation by first principles to find derivatives from scratch.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student's past paper attempts revealed a process snag: "she checked answers before finishing the whole exam," leading to less realistic test practice and gaps in timed reasoning.

A Year 11 student avoided consulting formulas at the start of quadratic exercises, instead guessing—so errors snowballed until prompted to reference the provided formula sheet.

In a recent Year 7 session, another student hesitated to write out steps when multiplying with negatives, saying it felt slower; this made sign errors harder to spot later.

During Year 12 polynomial long division homework, incomplete working left some questions unfinished and feedback unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Manly Vale noticed some strong shifts lately. One Year 11 student, Fenna, worked through every HSC past paper from 1997 to 2015 and began correcting her own mistakes without prompting—something she used to need a lot of help with.

Filios, also in high school, has started incorporating textbook worked examples into his study habits for the first time, which helped him tackle tricky calculus and trigonometry problems mostly on his own.

Meanwhile, Jasmine in Year 6 managed to solve several advanced "olympiad" math questions independently after previously hesitating to attempt them without guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northern Beaches Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Kieran's Catholic Primary School.
