As a tutor the most we can do for is a student is to encourage them to not just learn what's in the book but also to understand the concepts with a greater depth. The other thing that tutor can do for a student to maximise their educational growth is to try and make them understand the points where they are wrong and not just to do their work for…

A tutor must be patient, flexible, honest and attentive. It is important that tutors do not give students the answer directly but allows the student to discover the answer with extra guidance. The ultimate goal of tutoring is to help students become independent learners. A tutor must be willing to adapt to different situations and learning…

I think spending time to change your whole approach of teaching because one of your student is unable to understand the whole content. Being honest and flexible is very important things a tutor can have. Flexible, patient, good listener and helping nature. Being flexible about the teaching approach because every individual has different way of…

The important thing that a tutor can give a student is time and attention which he might not get in classroom of students. Make the student feel the subject is not difficult by explaining concepts step wise. The tutor can also build self-confidence and problem-solving skills by making him approach the issue first and then guide the correct…

A tutor should be patient and never say something is easy. They should always encourage and find ways to explain something step-by-step such that everything is explained and can be linked back to a central idea. I believe it is most important for a tutor to tailor their teaching according to the needs of their student. Many students learn in different ways such as visual or through different compounding activities to build a strong foundation before moving on to more difficult concepts. I believe being able to teach a student in the way that is most…

I think that being able to build a rapport with the student is one of the fundamental skills to be a good tutor. This lays the foundation for the student being comfortable in asking questions to the tutor, as well as the tutor finding a teaching style that is most suited to the student. For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

Inside MardenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Isabel revised fractions and percentages through targeted worksheets and tackled area and perimeter of circles, often working through visual diagrams.

In Year 9, Ana focused on trigonometry—specifically applying the sine and cosine rules to solve problems involving non-right angled triangles—and also practiced advanced algebraic equation solving using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Em in Year 10 worked on expanding and factorising quadratics (using sum and product methods), as well as revising REDOX chemistry theory ahead of an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often got tangled in their thoughts during algebra and worded problems, leading to confusion about when to add or multiply—one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 10, a student arrived unprepared for test revision after forgetting which units were being assessed; this left her overwhelmed and piecing together topics from online resources instead of focusing on practice.

For a senior folio task, another struggled to convert drafts into a formal document and hesitated to work independently—motivation dropped as deadlines approached, with unfinished homework piling up.

Recent Achievements

One Marden tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after months of hesitating to ask for help, she arrived with her own list of questions and managed to work through all of them in one session, even deciding on her own to make a revision notes sheet for an upcoming test.

In Year 11, another student who had struggled with algebraic fractions tried out a new three-step study strategy and used it independently—her latest test score jumped to 80%. Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who typically did mental math silently began talking through his problem-solving steps aloud for the first time during their lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marden Senior College.
