A tutor should give them the tools and the confidence to tackle any problem in the subject area. This means that the student should gain the skills to solve any problem in the subject area. To enable this level of learning, the tutor must be knowledgeable in the subject and well-prepared for each lesson. I have previous experience working as a…

I engage with and understand my students completely, enabling me to discover an easy approach for them to grasp concepts while finding enjoyment in the process. I…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give them the enjoyment from studying. A good tutor will be able to make the student feel that, studying is similar to any other activities, and that they can enjoy it while gaining new knowledge without a hassle. With enjoyment from studying, these students will gain…

I believe that cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset are important. A tutor should inspire curiosity, instill confidence, and equip students with the tools they need to become independent learners. Moreover, fostering a positive and supportive relationship built on trust and mutual respect is…

A tutor’s most important role is to build the student’s confidence and make learning clear and approachable. They should create a safe, supportive space where questions are welcomed and mistakes are part of the process. By adapting to the student’s learning style and pace, tutors can break down complex ideas and make them easier to…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

I think a good tutor needs to be patient with the student. There are times that the teaching process does not go as smoothly as planned but listening helps better understand the student as well as his point of view. I have my own teaching plan and note for every student. I find myself good at spotting main points that student should focus on and…

For me, every student may have a different receptive ability. Therefore, a tutor need to be patient for the first time to understand their students. And then, try to teach them for understanding the whole picture, the fundamentals rather than showing them the ways to solve a particular exercise without any combination with other knowledge. Passion…

I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. Tutors should check for understanding as they go and constantly build confidence so that the student feels like their abilities are improving. When a student feels confident, wonderful things begin to happen. Their curiosity is ignited, and they are more likely to ask questions in class and read additional texts about things that interest them.…

As each student is unique it is important to assess their level of learning, identify the areas where they are lacking and then provide suitable tutoring. A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. Inside MaribyrnongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sophia focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers using visual models.

Year 8 student Jack worked through linear equations with two variables and practiced times tables for fluency.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Mia tackled trigonometric ratios in right-angled triangles and applied Pythagoras' theorem to solve worded geometry problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was assigned Algebraic Fractions homework but left it incomplete, which slowed progress during the next session—he needs to finish the assigned homeworks on Algebraic Fractions.

In Year 11 Biology, one learner tended to rely on memorising definitions instead of connecting concepts using textbook readings and key terms; this led to difficulty answering deeper questions.

For a Year 5 student, written working was often skipped in multiplication problems: "thinks a lot in her head. Does not write working out," making it harder for her to catch errors or remember steps later.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maribyrnong noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now confidently voices questions when stuck—this change meant he could work through challenging algebraic fractions without guessing.

Another high schooler recently completed a matrix assignment entirely on his own and presented each step clearly for the first time, following earlier struggles with laying out his solutions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student moved from needing hands-on support for two-digit addition to accurately solving three-digit problems independently and even explaining her steps out loud during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's Primary School.
