Furthermore, I believe it is important to provide a human connection, and be consistent such that these young learners believe their tutors really want the best for them. Be adaptable. Everyone learns differently and it is the tutor's job to be able to work with the different learning styles. I find that this is the most challenging to get the grasp of as it varies widely across all sorts of students, however, once a tutor learns how a student processes different problems and is able to cater their explanations;…

I think an essential thing a tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a student…

The number one most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure that the student builds a strong understanding of the content. There is a difference between knowing how to work out a problem, and why a problem is solved the way it is. I think that when you understand the why instead of just how it becomes very simple to complete…

I believe it is crucial for tutors to understand that every student is unique and has different learning journeys. Thus, tailoring your approach to meet the specific needs of the students by providing a variety of learning tools and strategies is key. Additionally, being able to be their support system and create an environment for them where they…

1. A tutor can shape how a student thinks about a particular topic/subject. If while teaching something the tutor himself/herself is not interested then the student will be less likely to pay 100% attention 2. A tutor can empower the student to learn better and at their own pace. Just letting the student know that it is okay if you take more time…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is to motivate and encourage them to do their best. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to instill a sense of self-efficacy in the student, the belief that one is able to accomplish things and solve difficult problems through hard work and practice. To encourage and make the students believe in themselves. Some students who are not doing well in Maths feel that they do not have the aptitude for the subject. We, as the tutor, have to identify the areas that they need improvement, teach and build their foundation from there. When they experience small success, their motivation for learning…

Inside MarionTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student James revised normal distribution concepts, calculating probabilities and exploring how variance and cumulative frequency shift as distributions change.

For Year 12, Aiden practised finding the area under curves using integration—especially between two functions—and applied these skills to kinematics problems involving displacement and velocity by interpreting different types of graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Finn focused on random variables, working through mean and standard deviation calculations across various population sets to deepen understanding of probability in statistics.

Recent Challenges

Struggled to keep formulas for derivatives and anti-derivatives distinct—mixing them up during integration tasks meant that correct steps were sometimes lost, as one tutor noted, "he mixed up the stuff."

In Year 9 maths, forgetting units of length and area slowed progress in geometry.

For a younger student, lack of confidence with wordy problems made comprehension in problem-solving sessions difficult.

Another senior student relied heavily on cheat sheets and needed more active revision before exams; this resulted in last-minute stress when attempting practice tests under timed conditions.

Recent Achievements

A Marion tutor recently noticed a big shift in one Year 11 student, who started incorporating diagrams into written physics answers—something they'd previously avoided because it felt confusing.

Another high schooler, after struggling with chemistry redox reactions, began balancing half-equations independently once rules for oxidation states finally clicked.

On the primary side, a Year 4 student who used to guess quietly during maths is now asking for help whenever stuck and even solved several fraction questions on their own last session.

The older student wrapped up by creating a personal formula list for future reference.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Marion Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Westminster School.
