Understanding and learning about the child's needs and adapting your teaching style to best suit their needs. It is also important to develop a trusting relationship in which the child knows that the tutor is there to provide them with the best support they can offer to aid their learning. I believe that I am a very child-centered tutor. I believe…

It is important that students succeed and sometimes this means going back to the concept. In my teaching I've explained to students who don't understand that the teacher needs to find another way to present the content. Having taught ESL I empathise with students whose second language is English. I have considerable experience and have succeeded…

To encourage and make the students believe in themselves. Some students who are not doing well in Maths feel that they do not have the aptitude for the subject. We, as the tutor, have to identify the areas that they need improvement, teach and build their foundation from there. When they experience small success, their motivation for learning…

While I think it's important to assist students from an academic standpoint, I also think it's important for tutors to help students develop a sense of purpose in their studies. Teaching students to direct their motivations towards their goals, rather than solely their grades, can be just as important for their future as anything a tutor can…

At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. So, I can make small but definite improvements by giving them the different levels of questions, from the lowest they can do to the level they need to achieve.…

Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. There are a lot of students who don't lack in talent and just a couple little things are holding them back. Solving those can really help them grow. I am able to seperate a topic into byte sized…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. However, this can be challenging especially when they have many knowledge gaps and feel fallen behind at school. A good tutor is able to identify and fill in those gaps, helping students realise their full potentials and gain confidence. It is also important…

Firstly, the most important thing that a tutor should do is build up confidence in their kids that they have the potential to achieve their goals and are destined for the best. This instantly boosts up the kids for striving for accuracy and their dreams. Secondly, a tutor should never be a demotivator in any manner. This is important as any…

As mentioned above, to make a student feel comfortable is really important as it makes them more confident with the material not only in that subject but universally. They become more confident as a learner and will find it easier to develop the tools to solve problems themselves more independently of others. Additionally, as a tutor, I feel like…

The most important things I can do for a student, is to put myself in their shoes when teaching. Often some students take longer to understand, comprehend or apply the knowledge taught. It' so important to go at their pace, whilst challenging them as well, because there's nothing we can't achieve if we set our minds to it. It' important to simply…

Expanding on what I have written earlier, I think that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be prepared, and always willing to learn. I think this requires being a bit humble, and accepting that, even with something that may appear to be far below the tutor's learning, there may still be things that aren't known or have…

I feel a tutor must be able to invoke a sense of interest and joy in a students minds for the subject they teach. As a tutor, you are someone who has studied the subject beforehand and are more knowledgeable about the subject than a student who is just starting out. This makes it difficult for tutors to reach their maximum potential while teaching…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

Inside MarlestonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zara focused on comparing fractions using visual aids like pie diagrams and also practised solving Roman numerals.

Year 9 student Archie prepared for an upcoming test by tackling algebraic multiplication and worded questions from both his booklet and extra resources.

Meanwhile, Lachlan in Year 10 completed Pythagorean theorem exercises before beginning trigonometry with the sine rule, applying these skills to right-angled triangles as well as related problems from his electrician workbook.

Recent Challenges

Messy written work and disorganized materials slowed progress for a Year 7 student; as one tutor noted, "sheets and books were quite messy/disorganized—fixing this may help her keep track of instructions and tasks."

In Year 10 Maths, not reading assignment instructions closely led to confusion with scaling diagrams, causing errors in the final drawing.

A senior student in Year 11 struggled to extract key information from worded problems, leading to repeated misunderstandings of what questions required.

In each case, missed or unclear process steps meant time was spent clarifying instructions rather than advancing on new concepts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Marleston recently noticed some real breakthroughs across different students.

In Year 10, Tia has started catching her own mistakes during trigonometry practice—she now pauses to check her work and corrects errors independently, which she hadn't done before.

During a session with Archie (Year 8), he not only tackled basic algebra confidently but also transferred those skills to new types of problems without hesitation, showing far more initiative than in earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, younger student Natalia created her first worded maths problem on her own, having previously needed step-by-step prompts for similar tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond Primary School.
