I believe a tutor can ignite and enhance confidence in their students, giving the students the opportunity to take part in class discussions building up a healthy mindset that inspires them to overcome their weaknesses and strive towards improvement and their goals. I believe one of my strengths as a tutor is being an active listener which I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are building their confidence, personalizing their learning experience, and encouraging critical thinking. A tutor should create a supportive environment where the student feels safe to ask questions and make mistakes. As a tutor, I believe my strengths lie in my ability to communicate complex…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

My strengths are that I am patient, I will work with a student for hours without tiring to ensure they have mastered a concept, good at explaining, I can break down a complex topic into simple bits that can be easily understood ,…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

I think the most important thing a tutor can offer to a younger student is their experience, similar to that of a mentor. Beyond course content, tutors can draw from their study, career and life experiences to help the student navigate their path. I am proud of my ability to teach and explain concepts to others effectively and thoroughly, which I…

A tutors primary task is to help the student with what they want to be helped with, and as a part of that accommodating to their individual needs and goals. Doing anything else would simply be disingenuous. It is worth noting further that accommodating to the student's needs in any way reasonable is quite close to the most important thing a tutor…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. Although raising marks is the main objective for tutors, they must be able to interact with the students and find their weak points and there is a limit to what they can teach. They must act as a pillar that can support their…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. The process of getting started was very simple and clear, the tutor is doing a great job.
Karen, Maroubra

Inside MaroubraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Claudia focused on division and 3D shapes, connecting these to fractions while completing her Excel homework.

For Year 7 Ava, lessons explored coordinate geometry by graphing with tables of values and investigating transformations of shapes on a number plane.

A Year 8 student worked through the introduction to trigonometry using SOHCAHTOA as well as solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 6, one student often avoided showing working in algebra and fractions, especially when unsure—"she would pause, then erase attempts rather than risk a mistake." This hesitation meant feedback opportunities were missed and progress slowed during lessons.

A Year 10 student tackling trigonometry tended to rely heavily on calculator shortcuts for even basic steps, which led to gaps in understanding key trig definitions.

In Year 8 algebra, another lost focus midway through multi-step problems; as noted, "he'd get distracted and forget earlier steps," leading to repeated errors that undermined his confidence in class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maroubra noticed Ava, a Year 7 student, recently started checking her own working for mistakes and now asks for tougher questions when she finishes early—this is a big shift from when she'd quietly move on without double-checking.

In Year 6, Claudia used to hesitate with division by large numbers but can now independently solve problems involving six-digit dividends and confidently explains each step aloud.

Meanwhile, Gia (Year 4) has begun completing her homework before sessions without reminders and last week attempted all the "challenge" questions for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Aidan's Catholic Primary School.
