I perceive strong communication skills, high level of patience and sound receptive skills are very important in the role of a tutor. I showed the ability to adapt to my students’ needs. Especially when I had a student who experienced difficulties with the English language and topics covered in the 9th grade. I explained the material in a…

Learn with the student. I am striving to be a better person each day, with it, comes humility. I believe that if you come to the student appearing human and able to make mistakes (as I am not a robot), the student will understand that I am not intimidating nor a machine, but rather human just like they are. Building a strong and humane connection…

I'd say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making them feel more confident in their ability to learn a lot of the time. Because they may feel as though a topic is beyond them but once broken down in ways that they already understand it benefits them wholly not just as a student but as a person in general. My strengths as a…

Assisting a student to experience progress and achievement is important. It promotes the student's self-esteem and positive attitude to learning, and also helps develop the trusting student/teacher relationship. Due to my 30+ years of extensive classroom experience and professional learning, I am able to identify and accommodate strategies that…

I believe we as tutors need to understand the student's situation, why they are stuck in a problem or why are they particularly struggling with a topic. Only then, we can try to help them grow and improve step by step along the way. Although I might not have that much experience teaching in a formal tutoring session, I hope I could make students…

The most important thing is to be a friend. Someone to always support the student as they undergo the emotional journey of highschool and exams. Second to that is to materially improve their marks by explaining concepts and using repetition to increase accuracy. My strengths are being personable and relating to the students struggles with…

I believe motivating the students to feel confident in the subject and their ability to answer the questions and tasks to their best standard is the most important thing. We are a source of knowledge but our job is to give the students the tools to success rather than answer their work for them. As a tutor, I am highly organised and have an…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for a student is to be supportive and continue to persevere to find a way in which he student can engage in the selected subject. When I was a student, the most important thing a tutor could do for me was offer me revision resources and previous exams since these provided the best source of practise. However, another important thing that tutors can offer is patience. When teaching, one must be respectful and patient and understand that not all students learn at the same pace…

I consider motivation and fostering a growth mindset to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student. A tutor should be able to inspire students to achieve excellence in their respective fields and create that growth mindset that will help them in their future. A tutor must always be very patient since each student is different and should be handled with care. Furthermore, there is no hard and fast rule in education, so a tutor should be open to learning and improving themselves. Listening to and observing students is also an essential quality for a tutor. Personally, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Since learning can be challenging, tutors should be willing to explain the concepts to students multiple times and provide ample time for practice and understanding. First of all, I am capable to adapt my teaching style to different students. Furthermore,…

A tutor needs to ensure they can engage with their students to an optimal level. A tutor needs to ensure students want to come back to them and learn from them all while ensuring they are actually learning something. Tutors should also know when they need to be tough on students and have to let the students know they are doing wrong otherwise the…

Inside MaroubraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Claudia focused on division and 3D shapes, connecting these to fractions while completing her Excel homework.

For Year 7 Ava, lessons explored coordinate geometry by graphing with tables of values and investigating transformations of shapes on a number plane.

A Year 8 student worked through the introduction to trigonometry using SOHCAHTOA as well as solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 6, one student often avoided showing working in algebra and fractions, especially when unsure—"she would pause, then erase attempts rather than risk a mistake." This hesitation meant feedback opportunities were missed and progress slowed during lessons.

A Year 10 student tackling trigonometry tended to rely heavily on calculator shortcuts for even basic steps, which led to gaps in understanding key trig definitions.

In Year 8 algebra, another lost focus midway through multi-step problems; as noted, "he'd get distracted and forget earlier steps," leading to repeated errors that undermined his confidence in class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maroubra noticed Ava, a Year 7 student, recently started checking her own working for mistakes and now asks for tougher questions when she finishes early—this is a big shift from when she'd quietly move on without double-checking.

In Year 6, Claudia used to hesitate with division by large numbers but can now independently solve problems involving six-digit dividends and confidently explains each step aloud.

Meanwhile, Gia (Year 4) has begun completing her homework before sessions without reminders and last week attempted all the "challenge" questions for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Aidan's Catholic Primary School.
