As a student, I've enjoyed classes when they are interactive and fun. We tend to show more interest in the subject if the class is engaging. I'm approachable, observing and identifying each kid to study their character and focus on them in a certain way, keeping the class fun and…

I think a tutor needs to be encouraging so that students can develop positive attitudes towards their studies, as that will help them succeed on their own. Furthermore it is important for a tutor to be a consistent resource for information that is relevant to their individual hurdles in learning a subject. I believe I am able to communicate the…

To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. Acknowledging one's own failure and encouraging students to learn from his/her mistakes rather than losing hope. Student needs to understand why they are smothered with all this education, the reason…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

Imparting information is an important part of being a tutor, but modelling curiosity, a genuine love of learning and knowledgem and above all showing others what it looks like to be passionate about the at or discipline is as important. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is highlight their strengths as a learner. I don't want students to think they need a tutor because they need help and feel badly about their current academic performance. I want students to have control over their learning when it comes to choices, activities, and material. Students should…

Obviously, an important thing that a tutor can provide to their students is to support them academically. A tutor should be articulate about their workings, and master a great command over the topic. However, a tutor should also act as a mental support. They should act as an intermediary and acts as additional help if their students have…

A tutor should be able to resonate and communicate well with a student firstly. Another important factor is to keep patience and listen to what the students have to say and not rush them into understanding different concepts. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being patient and slowly explaining concepts in an easier way in order to be able to fully explain concepts that can be easily understood. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to share their passion for learning, helping them view education as an exciting adventure rather than just another task. Our girls love the tutor. There confidence in math is stronger
Esther, Marrickville

Inside MarrickvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia worked on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and completed a maths assessment to check understanding across key topics.

In Year 7, James practised index laws and simplifying expressions with like terms, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Mia focused on calculating area and volume of 3D shapes as well as tackling multi-step worded questions involving both two- and three-dimensional figures.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student tended to rush through multiplication problems, leading to repeated small errors—"he made little mistakes with multiplication while trying to get through the maths work as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled with times tables and would often guess rather than calculate answers for division or fraction tasks.

In Year 7 English, a reluctance to argue from another perspective meant written responses were shorter and less developed.

During homework in Year 4, spelling activities left a student frustrated and distracted when difficult words slowed progress; unfinished sections remained at lesson's end.

Recent Achievements

A Marrickville tutor recently noticed that Sophie, a high school student, now independently works through mixed word problems in maths tests—last term she needed reminders for every step, but this week she finished 1.5 tests in the time needed for one and went back to check her answers without prompting.

Another win: Olivia, also in high school, has started fixing mistakes in her fraction calculations before writing them down, where previously she'd skip checking altogether.

In Year 4 English, Leon moved from short sentences to adding more detail on his own; last session he wrote four connected sentences with clear arguments about wisdom versus money.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library & History: Marrickville Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
