Academic impact is a primary objective of a tutor. The result for a student may not always be dramatic, going from F to A+, but it can also involve slow progress. Always staying engaged with the student, periodically inquiring about their comfort in learning the subject, and creating a conducive atmosphere for learning are essential. A tutor must…

The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. Finding the right teaching style for that kid and teaching as such will make the kid more involved into the subject and makes learning fun. I am a very good observer and an active listener. I make sure I tend…

Encouragement and being able to explain concepts in a digestible manner are what makes a good tutor, but a great tutor checks in on students to make sure that they are thriving. It takes courage and self-reflection to find a tutor in the first place, so the least a tutor can do is make sure to give the tools for a student to make it on their…

Identifying the best technique to teach the student is the best thing a tutor can do. Students learn much faster when they are taught according to their methods of learning. Identifying the right technique to teach will lead to the student identifying the perfect technique to study in the presence or absence of a tutor. I have had enough…

If a student is having struggles with certain subject, they may have a negative view on it which limits their openness and ability to learn. I believe a tutor can help a student find the most suitable way to learn a subject that they might be struggling with in a traditional classroom. With enough encouragement and flexibility in their approach, a tutor can build a student's confidence in their own ability to learn, understand, and grow. I'm flexible with my teaching approach - I don't…

I think it is important for tutors to show patience and understanding towards students. It is so important for tutors to adapt their method of teaching to the way the student learns. Every student not only has different needs and difficulties, but learns concepts differently. The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are not only concrete plans and a sufficient level of knowledge, but also empathy to understand what the student needs and their natural ability. Inside MascotTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava focused on double-digit addition and understanding place value using visual aids.

Year 8 student Andre worked through congruent triangle postulates for an upcoming maths assessment, as well as deepening his analysis of major themes in the novel 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ethan revised basic trigonometric identities and practiced entering angles on his calculator while also learning how to solve for unknown sides in triangles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly leaned on their calculator for basic multiplication and fractions, slowing progress in lessons; as noted, "he was more reliant on the calculator," making it harder to build number fluency.

In Year 10 Maths, a lack of revision meant algebra strategies taught just weeks earlier were forgotten during problem-solving—leading to hesitancy and skipped questions.

One Year 4 learner lost focus quickly when asked to count backwards by twos or fives, often leaving work incomplete.

During Year 11 English analysis tasks, superficial reading of set texts led to uncertainty unpacking key passages under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A Mascot tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after struggling with algebraic manipulation, now attempts problems without a calculator and actively revises notes between sessions.

In another high school lesson, a student who used to avoid challenging questions has started requesting tougher problems and persevering through them independently, especially in data concepts and probability.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated during addition tasks is now confidently completing multi-digit sums on her own and consistently keeps neat notes—she even remembers to include units at the end of her answers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mascot Library (incl. the George Hanna Memorial Museum)—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mascot Public School.
