Above all, a teacher should be compassionate. Compassion matters more than anything else. I feel that I try to understand students rather than simply trying to teach them. We all have weaknesses, and being able to identify them, especially when they are not easily visible, is the most important…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. I’m patient enough to take care of a children’s work and I can spend more time with him or her to…

It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

Communication is very important, as it is vital that the student is able to convey any questions, misunderstandings or opinions to the tutor for a tailored tutoring experience to occur. It is also at the same time that the tutor needs to be precise and straightforward with their explanation on different concepts. I think I generally build a…

Prepping lessons early, helping with questions outside of tutoring time, marking tests. In my opinion, I think that it is important to understand every student is different and has their way of learning. It is important for a tutor to identify and tailor a plan for each student so that they are learning efficiently. For example, as I am a visual and auditory learner, I learn most efficiently by watching lectures and videos and less…

Always know what students need and what's their priority. This means a tutor need to show respect to students. I consider that a tutor should be a good teacher but also a good person. He should be able to communicate and transmit his passion to give the desire to learn. A tutor can inspire a student to learn more and be inquisitive. Making the student ask more questions and grasp the concepts, are the major things a tutor can do for a student. According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

Recognising what the student requires and teaching it accordingly is one of the critical teaching factors. After teaching a specific section, it is essential to question the student on the respective topics to understand whether the student understood the basic concept of the section I believe every student has a different capacity. As a student,…

Inside MaylandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Pranavi covered timetables up to 12x and practised recognising basic equivalent fractions using denominators up to 5.

In Year 7, Milly worked on converting fractions to decimals and percentages as well as applying order of operations with division questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Harrison focused on solving quadratic equations by applying the null factor law and reviewed methods for factorising quadratics in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7–8 maths, several students relied heavily on written calculation for times tables (e.g., "she needs to work out the answer on paper" for 12 × 12), which slowed progress in fractions and long division.

A tutor noted, "she sometimes puts the 3 in the thousands column instead of hundreds," revealing how layout issues disrupted multi-digit subtraction.

In Year 10 algebra, one student could express answers verbally but struggled to write equations accurately—especially with negative coefficients and variables—often missing crucial signs.

In English, another student's tendency to omit quotation marks or misplace commas made dialogue unclear and marked down her writing.

Recent Achievements

One Maylands tutor noticed Milly, a high school student, now self-corrects her mistakes in algebraic expressions—she highlights like terms and revises her answers without prompting, which was a big shift from needing step-by-step help.

In another session, Harrison demonstrated greater independence in trigonometry by recalling the correct ratios and showing his full working when solving for unknown sides, something he'd hesitated to do previously.

Meanwhile, with younger students, Naba moved from tracing numbers with guidance to writing several digits unaided (2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9) during maths activities.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
