I think that being able to build a rapport with the student is one of the fundamental skills to be a good tutor. This lays the foundation for the student being comfortable in asking questions to the tutor, as well as the tutor finding a teaching style that is most suited to the student. I am confident in my ability to explain subject matter to the…

Ultimately the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to aid them in learning. However, along with that there must be good foundations to assist this, such as: creating an environment the student feels comfortable and happy in, building good rapport with the student and ensuring the learning content is being delivered in such a way…

I think being a good listener and being patient are the most important things a tutor can do for the students. Because a teacher needs to be patient enough to handle the students and first, need to listen to them. One of the most important things I have realised over helping my friends in year 12 would be to walk through the question and not actually doing the question for the student. Sure you could do the question for them and they could get full marks for an assignment or whatever, but they would not understand the fundamentals lying behind the question…

Build interest. For younger student, most of them are still trying to find their interest in a certain field. The best thing I can do is to build interest with my humorous skill. In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

I think it is the ability to understand the student's capability and their needs. Therefore, as a tutor, I can provide personalised learning lessons that are suitable to the student, hence, they can still progress at their own pace without too much pressure. The most important quality required as a tutor is my good subject knowledge. In addition,…

Inside MaylandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Pranavi covered timetables up to 12x and practised recognising basic equivalent fractions using denominators up to 5.

In Year 7, Milly worked on converting fractions to decimals and percentages as well as applying order of operations with division questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Harrison focused on solving quadratic equations by applying the null factor law and reviewed methods for factorising quadratics in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7–8 maths, several students relied heavily on written calculation for times tables (e.g., "she needs to work out the answer on paper" for 12 × 12), which slowed progress in fractions and long division.

A tutor noted, "she sometimes puts the 3 in the thousands column instead of hundreds," revealing how layout issues disrupted multi-digit subtraction.

In Year 10 algebra, one student could express answers verbally but struggled to write equations accurately—especially with negative coefficients and variables—often missing crucial signs.

In English, another student's tendency to omit quotation marks or misplace commas made dialogue unclear and marked down her writing.

Recent Achievements

One Maylands tutor noticed Milly, a high school student, now self-corrects her mistakes in algebraic expressions—she highlights like terms and revises her answers without prompting, which was a big shift from needing step-by-step help.

In another session, Harrison demonstrated greater independence in trigonometry by recalling the correct ratios and showing his full working when solving for unknown sides, something he'd hesitated to do previously.

Meanwhile, with younger students, Naba moved from tracing numbers with guidance to writing several digits unaided (2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9) during maths activities.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
