As I have stated earlier, I value the most important role of any tutor to be ensuring a student's deep understanding of concepts, as from my own experience this is invaluable to their success. Also important as a tutor is making sure the student is keeping up with the rest of the class, as the majority of their learning is still in the classroom,…

The most important thing that a tutor could do for a student would be to not only teach a student course material, but to give them the ability to grasp an understanding of the theory behind it. I believe that once you understand something, it is quite difficult to forget it. Great communication skills Have been told am an excellent teacher from…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only make them understand what they are teaching them, but also make the student enjoy the process. Well I think a tutor most important piece they can do for a student is take them from where they are to a place where they’re performing better in what they would like too. No matter where they are at whether it is passing to doing well or doing well to smashing it. I also think it’s about finding ways in which the student learns best. I think…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to like a teacher equip students with the ability and tools to approach the problem. Rather than rote learning, giving students the tools allows them to approach problems that they may not have seen as well as that which they had prepared for. Shifting teaching and explanatory methods to …

Apart from helping them achieve good grades, a tutor could also act as a guide or a right role model figure to inspire and motivate the students. Undoubtedly, the student and the tutor are going to have conversations that are off-topic, having a sound mind to answer those questions a student might have reflect those inner qualities about the tutor…

Giving your student confidence and guidance is key. When teaching a concept, the biggest part in my mind is not only being able to establish an understanding for the concept to the student, but for the student to feel confident in their own knowledge. That initial growth in confidence in a subject is usually what fuels later motivation and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is give them the confidence to become fully autonomous, independent learners. I believe by doing this, students are given the chance to discover and learn as much as they can, with no hurdles of doubt or lacking self-esteem in their way. It is my belief that tutors can not only achieve this by…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer help which is tailored to the student's specific needs. I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. Bridget, McKinnon

Inside McKinnonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on recognising and naming shapes, as well as exploring equivalent fractions using visual aids.

In Year 9, Ruby focused on solving equations with one unknown and practiced operations with fractions and ratios to build confidence.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Chloe reviewed the use of trigonometric ratios for right-angled triangles and applied bearings in geometry questions, often working through real-world navigation examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student arrived unprepared—no homework or maths books—leaving the session unfocused and limiting review of subtraction and times tables. As a tutor noted, "he was under prepared for me to be there and once again had no homework or schoolbooks with him for either of us to review."

In Year 8 algebra sessions, another student's written work was often messy and lacked clear working steps; negative signs were missed during factorising quadratics, which led to repeated calculation errors.

During a Year 11 trigonometry lesson, heavy reliance on notes made it difficult to independently apply bearings concepts when challenged with practice questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mckinnon recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples now able to solve trigonometric equations independently and draw the corresponding graphs without prompting, even choosing the right method for minimum or maximum points independently.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to use calculators in class, successfully applied Pythagoras's theorem unaided and calculated trigonometric values while working through problems on circular functions.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often guessed at shapes is now confidently naming them and identifying fractions once they're explained, finishing a worksheet with no errors this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ormond Primary School.
