The most important thing is understanding. A tutor needs to understand that different people learn differently and take a different amount of time to understand. One student is the same as the other and a tutor needs to understand that what works for one student may not for another. A strength of mine is that I really try to ensure the student…

Being patient with a student is vital, students need to be able to feel comfortable asking a tutor questions. Therefore being a friend and supportive to their needs encourages a two way communication between the tutor and student. for example, if a student is frustrated because questions are too difficult, taking a break and letting them know its…

First of all, a teacher should be able to connect with the students. It does not matter whether it is just related of subject or related to any other examples. When students connect with the teacher, most of the times they are more comfortable in asking questions and understanding the concepts better. Secondly, a teacher should be smart enough in…

My thesis paper was about how positive reinforcement positively affects the students academics and based on the results the most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to appreciate them and the effort that they put in their work. Giving encouragement to a student will mean so much to them and that can motivate them to do better in…

Every student is special and expecting same response from every student is really not good . The velocity with which the child,s brain works is really different from kid to kid so the explanation from a tutor side has to be made again and again without thinking of his time till a sense of satisfaction is achieved from every student As a tutor, i…

It is crucial to be patient with students and understand their unique approaches to questions, instead of sticking to only one "correct" way to do things. It is also important for the tutor to be able to relate to the student and create a strong relationship, in order to earn trust and increase the student's willingness to learn. Being…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to cater our teaching to the students way of learning. As we work one on one with students it is our job to identify the students best way of learning such as hands on learning and modify and explain our knowledge in a way that is easy for the student to comprehend. I believe…

The key role of a tutor is to help students not just understand the material but to gain the skills and confidence to tackle it on their own. It’s about simplifying what seems complicated, tailoring the approach to fit the student, and encouraging them to think critically rather than just memorize answers. A good tutor knows when to guide and…

Inside Meadow HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Caleb worked on calculating the circumference and perimeter of circles and sectors, as well as solving worded questions involving manual decimal multiplication and division.

A Year 8 student focused on algebraic fractions, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing expressions with variables in the denominators.

For Year 7, work included understanding univariate data by finding mean, median, mode, range, and creating box-and-whisker plots using real data sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided writing out full algebraic working, as noted: "Doing too much in his head, needs to practice writing working out down instead." This led to confusion and hidden calculation errors during polynomial division.

In Year 7, formatting issues surfaced—messy written solutions made it difficult to revise or spot errors when checking geometry work.

A senior student often neglected consistent backchecking, with a tutor observing, "Lots of errors that arose from superficial backchecking and being distracted towards the end of the lesson," causing small arithmetic slips to persist into final answers.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Meadow Heights recently noticed a big shift with Oscar, a Year 9 student who used to freeze when stuck on maths problems—he now tries different approaches without prompting and talks through his thinking out loud.

In another session, Sedra (Year 10) independently recognised when to use the addition rule for probability after struggling previously, confidently translating worded problems into Venn diagrams.

Meanwhile, a primary student was able to complete most of her homework worksheet and showed clear understanding of BIDMAS after needing help before; she finished by explaining each step aloud as she worked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Meadow Heights Primary School.
