Strongly understanding their strengths and skills inside and out so that tutors can tailor and adapt to their situations. An example is having the student to solve a question but verbally share his/her thought processes to see if the approach requires improvement e.g does he/she think of drawing a diagram or remembering an equation/rule first?…

Everything begins with building a relationship with the child/student and getting to know them as a person, what interests them inside and outside of school. I believe in my students and their ability to succeed academically and overall and I make this message clear. I tell them, on a regular basis, I believe in you! You can do this! I won't…

For them to finish a lesson and have learnt something new or a new method or technique that may save them time or understand the question a lot easier now. I can explain information at understandable and clear way but if the student needs further clarification I am able to teach them further. I also like to use visual aids rather than speaking to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be positive, have patience and communicate frequently. This would ensure the learning environment for the students stays in a positive vibe as it would promote learning as well as improvement. Patience would be key as everyone has a different learning pace and it is important to have…

Mostly is the responsibility and the enthusiasm. As a tutor, they must do their responsibility to let students not only know the syllabus, but also have their critical and extend thinking about further questions. Tutors should prepare any references and the plans before the lesson, and be patient and polite to any students during the class. Give…

A tutor can help students to develop their skills so they can think out of the box. The tutor helps students to build their foundations. Most important, the tutor helps students to become a good human being. I am always open to new thoughts. I never discourage students from asking relevant questions. A tutor can provide the pathway of learning. The tutor should understand the position of his/her students. Significantly, the tutor helps to form a strong foundation which helps students to achieve the goals. Basically, teaching is an art. I prefer doing teaching in a simple way. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to become independent. I would say that tutoring is only a temporary solution to their academic problems. If they are going to enter a university, get a real job or did not have enough money to pay for tutoring services, I would want them to learn on their own. A time would…

Be patient with them and encourage them to do their best. Consistency is key and results don't just appear overnight, trust the process and at the end all anyone can ask of you is to do your best. Another big thing is to always be honest with them, whether that means admitting that you don't know something (but can find out for them) or letting…

Inside MeadowbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sophie worked through numeracy concepts including measurement and space, and also practised statistics and probability based on recent report topics.

In Year 8, Daniel focused on simplifying and rationalising surds as well as using index notation to establish the index laws with positive-integer indices.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily reviewed financial maths applications, concentrating on solving real-world problems involving interest calculations and budgeting scenarios.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students showed process-related challenges impacting their learning.

For example, in Year 11 Chemistry, one student struggled under test pressure to identify key information quickly—"she will need to learn to quickly identify what concepts relate to that information"—resulting in missed marks on stoichiometry questions.

A Year 9 student's foundational algebra skills were unclear; without these basics, he found word problems inaccessible and avoided attempting them independently.

In senior mathematics, skipping careful reading of trigonometry and inequalities tasks led to misinterpretation and incomplete solutions.

Calculator over-reliance was noted in Year 10 algebraic equations involving fractions, slowing progress with mental strategies.

Recent Achievements

A Meadowbank tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with chemistry calculations now quickly spots her own errors and confidently reworks stoichiometry questions, having realised the importance of using moles over mass.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 learner who previously relied on guessing is now asking for clarification whenever unclear and explaining his reasoning out loud, making it easier to catch mistakes together.

In primary sessions, one student who found number lines tricky was excited to show how she can now use them independently to solve addition problems—she even wanted extra practice on her own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Andrew is very happy with Stephen's tutorials. They have already formed a very healthy teacher student relationship, and Andrew is enjoying his Maths.  He got everything correct in a test he did at school last week.  The only thing that was incorrect was the fact that his decimal point was not in the correct place.

Just letting you know that Layla is gaining a lot from Jacob and in only three weeks.  Her confidence is starting to grow little by little and she is trying more on her own which is great to see.

Everything is going well. Lizzy and I are very happy with Michael and pleased with her results so far.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Italian Bilingual School.
