One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to create a space in which the student is comfortable and unafraid to make mistakes. This is extremely important in not only allowing the student to learn to the best of their ability, but to be able to question their own logic, problem-solve, and actively engage with content in…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is engage them within a subject, keep them interested to learn more, and motivate students to do their absolute best. Tutors should also be able to explain their reasoning very well, and build better study habits I believe my biggest strength as a tutor is being able to explain…

Encouraging and patient when explaining concepts to students. Tutors need to provide encouragement as this will build both motivation within the student to do well in a subject, and increase their overall confidence in a difficult topic. I believe setting achievable goals is also an important thing a tutor can do. Patience is also critical, as…

Try to make them feel confident in themselves and build intuition. I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

I feel a tutor must be able to invoke a sense of interest and joy in a students minds for the subject they teach. As a tutor, you are someone who has studied the subject beforehand and are more knowledgeable about the subject than a student who is just starting out. This makes it difficult for tutors to reach their maximum potential while teaching…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

In my opinion, I think that it is important to understand every student is different and has their way of learning. It is important for a tutor to identify and tailor a plan for each student so that they are learning efficiently. For example, as I am a visual and auditory learner, I learn most efficiently by watching lectures and videos and less…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

Inside MedindieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava focused on measuring using millimetres and centimetres with a ruler, and also practised converting between these units.

For Year 9, Mia worked through Pythagoras' Theorem applications and calculated the circumference of circles using formulas.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lucas explored trigonometry concepts alongside tree diagrams for probability, tackling practice problems to strengthen his understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, a student relied mainly on memory for times tables instead of developing flexible multiplication skills, which slowed progress in more complex problems—"relies too heavily on memory at times," one tutor noted.

In Year 12 Maths Methods, the use of a graphic calculator became a stumbling block; unfamiliarity with entering equations meant extra lesson time spent troubleshooting instead of focusing on underlying concepts.

A Year 7 student sometimes left working poorly set out, making errors harder to spot and correct ("Page format could be improved on!"). In the moment, this led to missed steps and confusion when reviewing solutions later.

Recent Achievements

One Medindie tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with surds and powers become much more comfortable expanding brackets, showing clear improvement after working through exercises together.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, the tutor observed her tackling area problems in irregular shapes—she learned to break them into rectangles and triangles, which was a big step from needing help at every stage.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student, who used to rely heavily on times tables charts, started attempting multiplication exercises independently and got most answers right without looking up the chart.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you for your email, we are very happy with the work Christian has performed with our daughters as are they. We consider ourselves fortunate to have such a highly skilled tutor in Christian and look forward to continuing these arrangements

Sophie has been good so far, Barnaby seems happy with her teaching method. She is a very nice, pleasant young lady, who seems to know all about maths and the curriculum.

Yes we are very happy with Nuradha.   He is extremely friendly, very reliable and my son has connected with him well. I will definitely keep you informed of our progress.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Walkerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wilderness School.
