I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

Recognising what the student requires and teaching it accordingly is one of the critical teaching factors. After teaching a specific section, it is essential to question the student on the respective topics to understand whether the student understood the basic concept of the section I believe every student has a different capacity. As a student,…

Above all, a teacher should be compassionate. Compassion matters more than anything else. I feel that I try to understand students rather than simply trying to teach them. We all have weaknesses, and being able to identify them, especially when they are not easily visible, is the most important…

I consider that a tutor should be a good teacher but also a good person. He should be able to communicate and transmit his passion to give the desire to learn. (I am a native french so I can also teach french). Firstly I would say that my experience is my biggest strength, my computer science school allows me a lot of flexibility so I am available…

I think tutors need to make/ help students feel comfortable and less stressful with their studies in school. Talking to the students and identify their strengths and weaknesses, and hence support them to improve and reach their fullest potential. I always try to adapt my teaching to the students. I never want to be fixed with one way of teaching…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is clearing all the doubts and most importantly understanding the difficulty and making it easy for them to understand. Also it is important for the tutor to make the subject fun for the student. My stranth is the ability to understand the students doubts and the ability to make the solution…

According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also adapt their…

The most important thing a tutor can do is focus on the specific needs of the student, identify areas of weakness, and tailor the teaching approach accordingly. Students may have gaps in their understanding due to missed classes, inadequate explanations, or other reasons. A tutor can identify these gaps and help bridge them by revisiting…

The aim of accepting a tutorial for a student is to achieve higher academic result. Yet for a tutor, it is not to merely give answers straight the way. In my point of view, tutoring is receiving inquiries and giving tutors' knowledge. A tutor should acquire abilities to help students first understanding the basic ideas buried in deep, and grow…

I believe the most important thing here would be to ensure the student understands what is being taught and is able to move forward in their learning. Tutors as facilitators must be able to give them the confidence that they are improving and can do even better with persistent practice and revision. I think one of my greatest strengths is being…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. From my experience, one of the most important thing I can do is finding out the weakness of students and helping them overcome that weakness instead of letting them away from it. Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

A student is a kind of Variable. All are different kinds/versions. Some are good with numbers, some are good with core theories, and some are good with implementation. I would love to first know the student well. Then I would like to feed the knowledge step by step. I make sure that he/she enjoys the subject instead of dislikes the course. I am…

Inside Medindie GardensTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Charlotte practised 8 and 9 times tables and worked through division problems, including using triangles to visualise concepts.

Year 8 student Ethan reviewed index laws and explored scientific notation by working through examples step-by-step.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Priya tackled trigonometry problems and created tree diagrams to help solve probability questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student's tendency to rely on memory rather than fully setting out multiplication or indices ("remembers times tables instead of being proficient at multiplication") led to slow progress when faced with less familiar problems.

For a Year 11 Methods student, using the graphic calculator without organizing written steps caused confusion during graphing tasks—"needs to be able to fully set out working! Page format could be improved on!"

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled to keep numbers straight when drawing clocks, which made reading their own answers harder and increased frustration in time exercises. In these moments, understanding faltered and small errors built up unnoticed.

Recent Achievements

One Medindie Gardens tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach to algebra—she used to rely on prompts for every step, but last session she solved equations independently after just one reminder.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who had struggled with area and angles finally tackled irregular shapes confidently by breaking them into rectangles and triangles, even explaining her thinking aloud without waiting for the tutor's hints.

In primary, one Year 4 learner decided to attempt times tables problems without looking at charts and got nearly all of them right on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Walkerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Walkerville Primary School.
