By creating a safe and encouraging environment, tutors help students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is foster a love for learning in order to produce an autonomous, bright-sparked individual ready to answer questions of the world and partake in the community at large. If school or the classroom is overwhelming or unhelpful to a student's learning, a tutor can help to process information and…

I think the biggest thing a tutor can do for a student is provide confidence. With confidence a student can approach a subject with understanding but also take risks and experiment and question the subject which leads to a better understanding and ultimately a passion for the topic. I share a passion for learning and try to pass that along to…

Be patient with them. Prepare, no matter how good you are at a topic you must always prepare for your lessons. Understand the topic you are teaching. If you can't answer a student's question, they will lose faith in your ability. Believe in your students! I was a hopeless student at one point and I believe my comeback from one is my…

Show commitment, whether its through showing up on time, or taking some of your spare time at home to mark their work. Also to support and encourage the individual to achiever their very best. I can explain a concept in many different ways, so if the student doesn't understand, I can easily explain in other ways until they get it. I can also adapt…

I've always said that a good teacher will help a student understand the work. A very good tutor will help a student find it within themselves to do the work. But i view myself as a great tutor, one that can do all of that, while actually inspiring the students. Im very patient, very organized, well spoken and persistent. Im a very hard worker, and…

Be encouraging - Student's won't understand something straight away and this can be a source of discouragement for them. The last thing they need is a tutor who refuses to acknowledge this. Constantly encouraing the student will help them realise it will only be a matter of time until they nail a concept. Be a friend - The idea of a tutor is to…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do for a student, is simply be patient and understanding. The reason the student has come to you as a tutor, is because they are struggling with a given subject, so being able to understand what the student is having trouble with is crucial, as well as being patient and nurturing if they do not…

With my previous experience both as being a tutor and being tutored by someone else, I believe a tutor should pay a fundamental role in empowering students to take ownership of their learning. A tutor is both a mentor and a teacher. They play a crucial role in a students attitude and perspective on the subject. A tutor can help a student to see the value in education and inspire them to keep working. Maths involves a lot of perseverance and so instilling that in a student is a very important life skill. I am very patient and…

I believe that boosts a student's confidence in the school environment as they are receiving additional help from outside. This allows them to enjoy their time at school and develop positive learning habits. All of these effects will result in better grades for a student, once again fostering more confidence, and cycling back to better grades. I…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for a student besides extending understanding of content and refining skill is helping a student enjoy the things they study and do - tutors have the power to help turn a student's weakness into their strength in a way that teachers aren't usually able to do in a standard classroom context. There are 3 things a tutor must do in order to be successful and respected: listen, care and try (all three of these are my strongest points). Instil confidence in one's ability and a good work ethic. If a tutor can instil confidence in the student, so that no matter their skill level they know they can perform to the best of their ability, than I believe that's one of the most important achievements they can do. Confidence is key in school and in life, and if the student doesn't believe…

Inside MenaiTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on solving simultaneous equations using graphical, elimination, and substitution methods, and also practiced probability questions.

In Year 10, Jack worked through chemical and periodic trends—like atomic radii, electronegativity, and ionisation energy—and tackled mole calculations with real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia explored equilibrium constants in chemistry and began tackling early concepts from the Year 11 Chemistry curriculum to build confidence for next term.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to sustain ideas in short answer English responses; "she missed valuable information by reading too quickly," which left key points underdeveloped and reduced marks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, confusion between moles and molecules persisted because written working was incomplete—leaving calculation errors hidden until review.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student tended to do algebra steps mentally rather than on paper, leading to frequent sign mistakes ("he tends to make some silly mistakes doing working out in his head").

After disappointing test results, one Year 9 learner lost focus and avoided reviewing feedback, stalling progress that week.

Recent Achievements

A Menai tutoring session saw Lily, a Year 11 chemistry student, actively organising her notes and making a real effort to adapt complex ideas into formats she could work through independently—previously she hesitated to tackle these tasks alone.

Meanwhile, Sam in Year 10 maths shifted from needing frequent guidance on compound interest questions to completing them confidently with little assistance.

For one of our younger students, Issac in Year 4, he initially struggled with area but persisted through the challenge and was able to complete his assignment with minimal changes needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Menai Public School.
