100% commitment & dedication are the values an english tutor should have for a student. A tutor should be able to understand the student well and his/her requirements. The lessons should be customised as per individual student's needs. I have an experience of more than 15 years in tutoring various subjects i.e. English, Maths, Science, Hindi,…

To make the students be clear of the basics which helps the students in the long run and also to be polite with them as not all students have the same level of understanding, and each student has different pace at which they learn so we need to give them as much time as possible to learn better. I am very patient with the children; I use different…

To be there through their questions and help them grow in areas they find hard in achieving. Help them find confidence in themselves and their abilities I'm a visual interpreter and learner. I explain using diagrams, pictures etc, this will make it easy for them to understand what is being taught and I tend to use examples relating to personal…

Give them the best level of assistance to help them excel in their school studies. Also, motivational speeches to let them know that school is just the start of their journey! I think my main strength as a tutor is my ability to listen. I take my time to listen to what the student is saying and really understand what their goals are. This is a…

In my opinion, the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to not force them into studying and to not put too much pressure on them to understand a certain topic. I believe that I can teach them in a way I have been taught and make them understand a certain problem easily. And even if I fail to make them understand I study…

Be honest. It is very important for an english tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Therefore, the language should always be clear and clean. My strength as a tutor is that I can impart the concept in a very understandable manner using different aides (visual etc.). I make…

I believe the most important thing an english tutor/teacher can do for their students is to help them discover their true potential, eradicate doubt and hone their abilities in what may otherwise seem an impossible task. As a tutor, I believe I can help my students overcome any challenge they face in their studies, by teaching concepts in a way…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is be patient and supporting and guide the student through any issues they may encounter. Show them the path on how to get there, not just the final answer. Make sure students understand the concept so that they may apply the concept to similar questions, not just memorise the steps.…

I really fell that an english tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I love to be with children and sometimes be like them and enjoy the life in a simple manner. This really makes a great bond between me and my students due…

I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to understand a student's personality, behaviour and approach to learning. The tutor can alter the learning method to suit the individual student. A tutor needs to understand that all students are different; thus, the approach they use to teach them should also vary. For example,…

I don't hope to replace the school teachers completely. However 1 to 1 and smaller group engagements would help put in a more personal touch that would minimize the weakness of the student, bring the best out of them and build character (patience, resilience, analytical thinking) to supplement them to succeed in their education journey Analytical…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build their self-confidence to a stage where they do not give up on anything to do with learning. Furthermore, a tutor can provide a student an opportunity to ask questions that have been unanswered by teachers at school and most importantly a tutor can act as a mentor for a student who…

Everything is going fine at the moment. Jess is happy with Amandi and so am I. She is punctual, gets down business straight away, and keeps in contact with times etc. The good thing is Jess understands what she is saying and Jess said herself, it makes such a difference when it's one on one.

Inside MerrylandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ali worked on understanding mean, median, mode, and range in maths, using school topics as a base.

For Year 8, Emily practised solving simple linear equations and expanded her skills to factorising algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Josh reviewed bivariate data analysis—comparing datasets using scatter plots—and explored correlation and lines of best fit for interpreting real-world trends.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student's work in algebra revealed steps were skipped in equation solving, which led to sign confusion and missed errors.

In senior years, a Year 11 learner was observed relying heavily on calculator shortcuts for statistics—familiarity with the function grew, but key working wasn't always shown or checked.

Meanwhile, a primary student's times tables practice remained incomplete, particularly for 6s and 7s; as one tutor put it, "he kept mixing up answers and left several questions unfinished at home."

During a Year 10 assessment task, rushed solutions meant careless notation crept in—answers became harder to follow and feedback less actionable.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Merrylands noted that a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess when stuck now asks for help without hesitation, especially when searching for easier ways to tackle algebra questions.

A Year 8 student, after struggling with equations, recently managed to solve them independently once the method was clarified—something they hadn't done before.

In primary, one younger learner surprised their tutor by reading times tables aloud confidently without needing prompts or checking notes.

Last week, another high schooler chose to break down word problems into steps on their own and started tackling long division with less guidance than usual.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Guildford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret Mary's Primary School.
