The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence to face the problems on their own. Constantly solving the problems for them isn't helping them, but deepening their understanding of the subjects and concepts through patience and persistence, and developing positive study skills through the process will help them…

A tutor should provide guidance and assistance at all costs for the student they are teaching. It is the tutors responsibility to do the best they can in order to help the student reach their potential. A tutor should sometimes take a step further to care for the student and a lot of the times the student will reciprocate your effort to create a…

The most important thing is to make them our friends so that they can share their difficulties with us. Secondly, a tutor should use creative techniques to make concepts easy to understand. For me, the most important thing that a tutor may do for a student is to help them establish a positive growth mindset towards learning. By knowing and openly embracing inevitable setbacks as a necessary step for further growth, a student would be more motivated to study. I think that it would also help them greatly in maintaining the motivation…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is enrich their learning experience so they can understand the importance of education, and the essential nature of honing their critical thinking skills. One of the most important things tutor can do for a student is provide them with a lot of feedbacks as well as lots of revision. It is from feedback that students understand where they have been going wrong and how to improve on it. Revision is essential because knowing content is one thing, learning to apply them is another. From experience, I…

Tutoring in my opinion is not only putting pen to paper. I believe as a tutor it is vital to offer the students a level of support that encourages them to want to progress in their education, it is important to understand the individual you are tutoring as not only will it make them feel seen it will also massively improve their learning…

Flexibility and encouragement are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. There is no doubt that every student learns and engages with academic content in a different way. Inside Merrylands WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Marcus focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, as well as converting fractions to decimals using step-by-step examples.

Year 7 student Sarah practiced adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and revised chance concepts through real-world scenarios.

For Year 10, David worked on essay structure and building background knowledge about set texts by breaking down prompts and discussing planning techniques.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, a student hesitated to use formal language in essays and struggled with planning, resulting in "structure issues within the essay" as noted by a tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student tackling comprehension questions often rushed through texts without patience, leading to misinterpretation and missed details.

In Year 5 mathematics, another student avoided writing out working for multiplication algorithms—preferring mental calculation—which led to repeated mistakes that were hard to trace.

When spelling was assessed in Year 7, uncertainty around new words meant progress stalled until the "look, cover, write, check" method was actively used.

Recent Achievements

One Merrylands West tutor noticed a Year 10 student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now methodically checking each step in long division—showing much more patience than before.

Another high school student had been hesitant to ask for help with essay structure, but this session worked bit by bit through each section, openly discussing where she felt stuck and using feedback to clarify her ideas.

A younger student mastered both the 9x and 11x tables after earlier struggles and started confidently breaking down worded multiplication problems into smaller steps without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are over the moon with what John is teaching Alisha. She was in her Maths class yesterday and the teacher asked the class a question that no one new the answer to except Alisha. The teacher was so impressed.

Tutoring seems to be going well. Joel's teacher has reported an improvement in his confidence and ability which is fantastic.

Sarah is fabulous! Friendly knowledgeable and flexible with times to work in with my child. Very happy with how she is working with my daughter.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greystanes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cerdon College.
