A tutor, firstly, needs to be able to understand and connect with the student in order to be able to properly convey information to that person since everybody learns differently. It's also a tutor's responsibility to ensure that the student is consistently paying attention to the work, by checking in and making the student feel important. A…

A good tutor, besides academic understanding, communication, patience and flexibility are the key aspects. Every student has their own unique learning curve and techniques, it is the tutor's job to discuss with the student and figure out the best way to convey the ideas and give appropriate study load. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all,…

Being always there for a student, and checking on their skill and content knowledge. Most people usually forget certain aspects over time, however by meeting a student often and challenge them with unique problems can ensure a student understand a topic. Additionally this allows them instantly get feedback and without delay and pushes them to…

I believe tutors should always believe in their student and never give up. They will aim to instil a positive growth mindset in their students. They will be persistent in their effort to help the student achieve their goals. Good tutors are also student focused, aiming to help the student develop their current skills and scaffold them to learn…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them become an independent and critical thinker who are unfraid of taking on unknown and challenging problems. I also believe that having an open and safe communication space with the students so they feel free and comfortable to express themselves in the classrooms.…

I feel the most important thing for any tutor is to be able to communicate with its student effectively. A tutor should not make an assumption that just because students do not have any questions, they are understanding the topic. It is important to go around the class and ask questions individually to check on the understanding. Teaching has…

A tutor can make a student stress free by making learning so easy and interesting , that a student enjoy learning rather than running away from it. And obviously achieve good grades. I can make a boring subject interesting to any student as I make use of properties and imagination to teach the topics and make learning a 'fun learning'. I…

Teach the lesson content easily where a student can grab it without any stress. Specially tutor should be able to teach the students to solve complex problems step by step and how to tackle it in a logical way. Also the tutor should be able to understand the students preferences and their learning methods at the first place to schedule or to map…

The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. Someone that he/she can look up to and be proud of. I have the ability to be extremely patient with my students which helps me gain their trust. Moreover, I can also induce self…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to be someone that can be there for a student when they need help emotionally, as well as academically. For many, being there for someone emotionally can be as simple as not knowing about their personal lives and just being there purely to help, while some students, I have found, need to talk about…

Try. Yes, Trying as many times as it needs to help students understand the concept truly. Coming up with different approaches to the maths problem if one is not working for them. Change of a student's viewpoint towards a subject. Once the attitude is changed rest is easy. Science is the study of natural laws and math is the universal language. We are studying nature in science and writing it down in math. It is very important for a student to feel connection to a subject. Not every student has the same thought process,…

First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. Also I think a good teacher has to teach the subject from a student point of view, so that we can understand where they face problem in understanding the concept and help them to…

My approach is to first teach the student the concept in the topic area. Then show the student with examples with increasing difficulty. Finally give questions for the student to solve alone by providing some time to think and answer alone. Then guide the student with correct (if answered wrong) and efficient (time saving strategies) methods to…

I think a tutor needs to be able to create that working relationship with a student, to show them how fun learning can be. When shown how interesting these things can be, students become much more motivated to engage and learn, and the 1-on-1 support that tutoring provides gives these children the tools they need to excel. I have 18 months of…

Inside Mill ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jasmine worked on multiplying and dividing fractions, including using variable symbols to form general formulas.

In Year 10, Chloe focused on solving linear equations and graphing them using the y = mx + c format, as well as deriving equations from graphs.

For VCE Chemistry, Naomi was introduced to stoichiometric problems and discussed how to apply mole ratios in basic chemical calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Science, Courtney relied heavily on school-provided notes and rarely created her own, making it difficult to recall concepts in assessments. As a tutor noted, "the teacher-provided notes are not as helpful in solving problems," especially when she couldn't find the right formula in physics or chemistry.

In Year 7 Maths, Peyton struggled with keeping track of variables and often left working unshown—"she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Meanwhile, a senior student entered exams with scattered revision materials; missing consolidated notes meant critical formulas were forgotten under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Mill Park tutor recently noticed that a Year 11 student, Courtney, now actively double-checks her calculations and pinpoints mistakes herself—last term she hesitated to backtrack or question her own working.

In another session, a high schooler who used to wait for prompts began independently seeking clarification whenever something felt unclear, marking a real shift towards self-advocacy.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Angeline showed new initiative by researching attributes of polygons for homework without being asked and then presented her findings with confidence during the next lesson.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Bethan, gets on really well with Sydney. Sydney is enjoying her lessons and she is already getting a better understanding of her maths.

Marcos seems great, Oliver is very happy. Difficult time with HSC on near horizon, so the assistance with exam prep and technique is helping immensely.

Hi Erica, Thank you for your email enquiring how Grace is settling in with Rose. In a word "great " they seem to have clicked straight away. Grace had a test following  the second tutoring session so she wanted to run a few things by Rose and the results of the test were fantastic. Not to take anything away from Feraz, as Grace's Maths had started to improve, but I think Grace is responding well to way Rose is explaining things and maybe because she is a girl too!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mill Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Francis of Assisi School.
