Listen. Students often feel overwhelmed and are unable to understand content because they don’t feel they are truly being listened to - something I relate to as a former student, and can easily combat by employing listening as paramount. I am incredibly patient and able to vary my methods of communication to connect with divergent personalities.…

As a tutor the main goal is to ensure that each student improves to the best of their ability and have confidence to try their best. Tutors should also prepare students mentally for school. i enjoy relating to students and having the ability to pass on my knowledge to them. I also want to provide them with advice to assist them throughout school…

Be supportive and believe in them wholeheartedly but at the same time not spoon feed them and sugar coat the level they are at. I believe the best thing a tutor can do is be realistic and set realistic goals for the student so that they work towards a common goal. I believe that I become a trustworthy friend to the students and they are able to…

Allow the student to have a greater appreciation of the subject, allowing them to view questions as puzzles which must be solved. I have a reasonable outlook on work/life balance. I am able to summarise content into simple analogies which are quite effective. I am approachable to the youth as i have likely experienced similar hardships they…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student has completely understood the concept. It is useless to move forward if they don't understand the basics. I am able to understand the thought process of a student and their weak points. This allows me to help construct their concepts from the base up and ensure they can solve any…

I believe a tutor can offer a student so much more that just knowledge; the encouragement of a tutor can unlock a student’s potential and lead them towards consistent success. Tutoring sessions can make a student feel heard and understood which is so important in a student’s journey through self discovery in their schooling years. As a tutor,…

One important thing a tutor can do is clearly understand what a student wants with their tutor. For example, if a student already know concepts really well, a tutor should be able to identify this and spend more time on areas where a student may struggle. Furthermore, it is important to consider the student first and foremost. A tutor should be…

I think that most students aren't too interested in most subjects. So for a tutor, it is basically a must that they can make their lesson at least somewhat engaging for their students (since they are having time taken out of their life just to study more, there's a high likelihood that they're even more disinterested). The next most important…

Show commitment, whether its through showing up on time, or taking some of your spare time at home to mark their work. Also to support and encourage the individual to achiever their very best. Patience and motivation are the main elements that are important as a tutor. As tutoring may be an outside source of school that is not compulsory, it is important to be able to push the students to revise on their work and properly understand their content to a higher level. Tutoring in my opinion is not only putting pen to paper. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be able to track how they are going and excelling or developing in while they are being tutored. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to address their needs and help them achieve their goal to the best of their ability. Inside MilperraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Liam focused on advanced essay writing by refining his Merchant of Venice presentation and practising deeper analysis for The Penelopiad, as well as preparing for short answer modules through targeted practice questions.

Year 11 student Petrea worked on structuring media articles and typing up detailed chapter summaries for her English text, with guidance on layout and examples to improve clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ryan tackled fractions by finding lowest common denominators and practiced reading comprehension skills, reviewing assignment drafts for both maths and English.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 English, one student hesitated to expand on evidence in essays, often stopping at technique identification rather than fully explaining how it created meaning. As a tutor noted, "he struggles with linking these together through succinct sentences," leading to missed marks despite strong content knowledge.

Another Year 9 student recounted story events instead of analysing them, relying on summary over deeper insight—this made essays less persuasive and more descriptive.

In Year 5 reading tasks, unfamiliar vocabulary caused pauses and self-correction; during spelling practice, mispronunciations persisted until extra syllable work was added. The result: uncertainty crept in when writing or answering under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Milperra noticed that a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now openly seeks clarification whenever he's unsure, especially during essay planning—showing much more initiative than before.

Another high schooler recently improved from struggling with unseen English exam questions to quickly identifying key techniques and confidently suggesting alternatives when given feedback, even earning a big jump to 15/20 on his latest assessment.

Meanwhile, a younger student who found decimals tricky at first is now not only solving those problems independently but also reading aloud with noticeably smoother pronunciation during sessions.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are over the moon with what John is teaching Alisha. She was in her Maths class yesterday and the teacher asked the class a question that no one new the answer to except Alisha. The teacher was so impressed.

Tutoring seems to be going well. Joel's teacher has reported an improvement in his confidence and ability which is fantastic.

Sarah is fabulous! Friendly knowledgeable and flexible with times to work in with my child. Very happy with how she is working with my daughter.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Panania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount St Joseph Milperra.
