To help the student to really understand maths, not just solve problems but make him/her see how much maths are important, and make the student feel comfortable and confident for an exam. I am very patient, easygoing and I'll try to engage the student with the class so he/she doesn't get bored, therefore distracted. And I know easy ways to learn…

A tutor should be able to help the student believe in their own ability to do the best they can in the subject. A tutor shouldn't look down on a student and instead make the student feel as if the environment is a safe space. I am young so I feel as if I could relate well to the students. I am hardworking and like a challenge, so I would be…

The most important thing is to probably instead of spoonfeeding the information to the student, communicate the importance of practice, discipline and routine. Moreover, to guide them along with their curiosity instead of just giving them questions to do. I think my adaptability would be useful for fields that I might not be as experienced at. My…

One of the most important things a maths tutor can do is instill confidence in their students so they can tackle problems they were previously unfimiliar with on their own, as well as perform in high stress environments, such as tests. The best way to do this in my opinion is to go through practice problems with the students untill they fully…

I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a maths tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is helping them fully understand the problems as well as the solutions. The tutor should help students understand the importance of each step in the solution instead of helping them seeking the final answer. The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is help them to understand that the concepts and techniques they are learning are much less frightening and overwhelming when they are boiled down and simplified into manageable components. When tackling a problem, the more aspects we don't understand, the more likely we are to panic and…

A very personal thing I like to teach my students is to pay attention to the small details. Each and every word, each and every equation. It is the ability to start at a granular level that makes the grand ideas and concepts easier to understand. My strength is really my ability to understand the student well. I believe different methods of…

Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a maths tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can…

I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

A tutor should be able to provide a different perspective for the students they are teaching. I always say that the most important thing is being patient. I know that every child is different, so tutors have to adapt to each child and teach children in the appropriate way, since each student understands subjects differently. I am a young person, so I am able to understand a child in many situations. I am aware of mental health and the…

Students can of course vary greatly in their strengths, difficulties and needs. This is true both intrinsically and as a function of development and external context. The most important thing that a maths tutor can do for a student is therefore to diagnose those individual needs, and "meet the student where they are." The essential problem of…

Inside MiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sam practised dividing decimals and fractions, then solved word problems that mixed fractions with decimals.

For Year 8, Zoe explored stem-and-leaf plots alongside calculating mean, median, mode, and range using real data sets.

In Year 10, Daniel worked through compound interest scenarios and revised inflation and depreciation calculations in preparation for his upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

One Year 9 student struggled with bringing their maths books from school, which meant valuable lesson time was lost tracking down past examples and missed homework.

In Year 11, a lack of exam back-checking and rushed time management led to "tiny mistakes in answers" that cost marks and left questions unfinished.

A Year 7 learner's written solutions for problem-solving tasks were sometimes hard to follow; as noted, "layout could be better," making it tough to spot where errors occurred.

Confidence dips after setbacks were also seen in senior grades—one student hesitated to ask clarifying questions during algebra practice, slowing progress.

Recent Achievements

One Milton tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate during problem-solving now confidently alerts the tutor about assignment issues before lessons, so they can tackle challenges together right from the start.

In a recent session with a Year 12 student, she independently revised her finance topics—especially compound interest and annuities—and completed all related questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with times tables last term is now consistently adding and subtracting large numbers on her own and recalling multiplication facts up to five. Last week, she finished every question unaided in her worksheet.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West End Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hubbard's School.
