The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

The most important thing is allowing students to become independent. The tutor should show them how to solve problems so that they can do them themselves and not just solve problems for them. My strength is illustrating concepts and finding the right examples that explain the point best. I also have good communication skills that make the student…

One of the main roles of a tutor is to support their student's learning and understanding. As a tutor, it is not only important to provide as much assistance and help as possible, but also to encourage them to think independently. By thoroughly explaining the concepts to them in a fun and engaging manner, they will develop a deeper appreciation…

It enables them to discover themselves and gives them the much-needed confidence to excel in their academics or prospective career path. I believe it is the confidence that tutors can develop in their students, so that the stress and nervousness is lessened when it comes to taking the end-of-year exams, or even just a simple test. Also, to be able to cultivate an understanding and mutual relationship with the student so that there is no shyness or hesitation when it comes to asking…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to their needs, and adapt lessons accordingly. Every students learns differently and struggle in different areas, so it is crucial that a tutor can adapt to them. To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

I think the most important goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment for a student. Being patient, understanding and maintaining a positive attitude has a wide array of benefits, including learning. Second to this is the ability to help a student gain an instinctive understanding of the concept manner. More than just helping with…

Not only teaching a subject, but making they more confident and independent. In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. A tutor should be knowledgeable to be able to address all concerns of a student and check when unable to immediately answer a query. Additionally a tutor should be easy to talk to, allowing for untrained conversations between student and tutor. Finally, a tutor should be able to motivate their students, ridding them of the disbelief that they…

In other words, teaching the student to learn things on their own is what makes teaching so powerful. Firstly I am patient with students to a certain degree. Inside Moonee PondsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Chemistry with Thanh in Moonee Ponds has recently focused on interpreting IR spectra and mass spectrometry data, as well as consolidating titration steps and terminology.

For Year 11, Sarah revised galvanic vs electrolytic cells by working through example reactions and discussed the limitations of the electrochemical series.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Alex tackled stoichiometry problems related to combustion reactions and reviewed key experimental design terms like independent/dependent variables, reliability, and systematic errors using practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student repeatedly hesitated to commit answers in worded problems, despite often having the right approach; as one tutor noted, "she's on the right track but doesn't follow through," leading to missed marks for incomplete responses.

In Year 8 Mathematics, confusion arose from inconsistent written layout when breaking down algebraic expressions—working was scattered and hard to follow, which led to lost steps mid-solution.

For a Year 4 student newly learning algebra, fear of making mistakes sometimes resulted in avoidance of writing answers altogether, especially with two-step equations. This left gaps that slowed later revision and feedback.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moonee Ponds recently noticed some encouraging progress across several year levels.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who once hesitated with thermochemical equations is now writing them accurately and independently, even tackling combustion calculations that were previously daunting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 maths student has started converting tricky worded problems into simple algebraic expressions on her own, moving past earlier confusion about how to start these questions.

At the primary level, one diligent Year 6 learner breezed through addition and subtraction work this week with barely any mistakes—something she struggled with last term—and double-checked all her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sam Merrifeld (Essendon) Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Monica's Primary School.
