Make students feel comfortable. As someone who had a lot of trouble finding tutors throughout middle school and high school, teaching in a way the student can enjoy and connect to is really important, and can be the difference between seeing a subject as "the worst" to actually having fun. Visualizing concepts! I am often complimented on my…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel capable. It’s not just about explaining the material, it’s about creating an environment where they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just help improve grades; they help build confidence, independence, and a mindset that says,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence as well as knowledge. When students believe in themselves, they naturally try harder and keep improving. I focus on making learning simple and less intimidating, encouraging curiosity and problem-solving instead of just memorisation, and being supportive so that students know someone…

The most important thing a tutor can do is spark curiosity—once a student is curious, learning becomes easier and more enjoyable. My role is to guide, support, and give them the confidence to keep exploring. My strengths are patience, breaking things into simple steps, and making students feel comfortable asking questions. I also grasp math…

I think a tutor should have at least some level of personal connection with the student. A tutor should always motivate students to try their hardest, and also engage them into the subject as much possible. The ability to understand, to some extent at least whether the student has understood that paricular concept or…

Give the student the foundational skills to excel on the own once outside of tutoring. A good tutor will be able to get their student to a level where they feel competent to work by themselves, and know both how to solve a problem, and why we approach the problem the way we do. My strengths as a tutor is my relatability, as math didn’t come easy…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. One of the most important things a tutor can do, other than assisting them to excel in all areas of learning is to instil them with the confidence to learn. This is crucial as it allows students to believe that school work/learning is to be something that is fun rather than a “chore†or boring. Once this occurs, the student begins to engage…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in themselves. It is not the tutor's job to simply pass on their own knowledge, but rather to show the student that they had the ability to excel on their own all along. Identifying the best technique to teach the student is the best thing a tutor can do. Students learn much faster when they are taught according to their methods of learning. Identifying the right technique to teach will lead to the student identifying the perfect technique to study in the presence or absence of a tutor. I have had enough…

Inside Moore ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Amaya practised vertical addition and subtraction, focusing on borrowing strategies for multi-digit sums.

In Year 10, Ethan worked through Chapter 8 Algebra problems, developing skills in expanding and simplifying expressions as well as solving linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Rhea refined her thesis writing for the English Common Module by analysing how "Billy Elliot" explores themes of commitment and gender stereotypes, while also practising essay structure using exemplar responses from recent HSC exams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 mathematics, a reluctance to show full working—especially when expanding logs or graphing parabolas—meant mistakes went unnoticed and re-occurred. One tutor noted, "She was quite distracted and reluctant to do work," during a session on completing the square; this left gaps in understanding that slowed progress with later exam questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student's written layout became hard to follow when subtracting large numbers using borrowing, causing confusion over place value and leading to repeated errors.

In English (Year 10), overwhelming feedback on linking statements led to early lesson finishes as the student needed time to process new information.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moore Park recently noticed that a Year 12 student, Gemma, who once hesitated with completing the square and applying log laws, now comfortably solves complex quadratic equations and expands logarithmic expressions without prompting.

Meanwhile, Sefi in Year 10 has shifted from needing step-by-step help on surds to confidently simplifying and rationalising them independently.

In primary sessions, Amaya—who previously relied on counting with her fingers—has begun inventing her own mental addition patterns and requested extra homework for practice. Last week, she drew analogue clock times entirely on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Surry Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Girls High School.
