A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas a tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with the…

The most important thing a tutor can do wouldn't be to have the answers to every question they have. It would be to teach a student properly so they understand the task properly, so that in the future, they can do it by themselves. It is important to teach students that mistakes often occur and these are crucial, as it allows us to recognise…

Ensure students understand the issues. One of the most rewarding aspects was witnessing my students' gradual improvement in not only their technical skills but their confidence in the subject. Mentoring and conveying to the students what is required to solve the problems. Always try to show what are the rules/principles behind any of the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is offer them hope through creating a realistic pathway to help the student gain their desired mark in their subject. This will motivate the student as they realise their goals are in fact achievable. My strengths are my empathy, kindness, dedication and reliability. It is essential that the…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to guide them towards the right path in their studies. This may include productive habits such as doing homework or even something as simple as asking for help when they're stuck. Instilling habits like these will enable them to move on their own once they're older. I consider myself to be…

Attentive listening and keep everything simple: it's deducted from the informal tutor experience that lecturing over hours and hours isn't a good way to help the kids. I tend to ask question like "Did you get it? Was it confusing?" and using simple words to explain the concepts, instead of overwhelming them with a pile of information or technical…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is be a source of motivation and encouragement, to help boost the student's confidence. Inside MortlakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on adding and subtracting fractions, then practiced multiplying and dividing both mixed and improper fractions using visual aids.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on expanding brackets in algebraic expressions and began factorising basic expressions for homework support.

For Year 11, Olivia reviewed the strategic role of financial management along with objectives of finance and explored the interdependence between finance and other business functions within her Commerce studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student often rushed to answers without showing step-by-step working, especially in algebra and inequalities—this made it hard to spot sign errors or missing pronumerals. "He tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working," a tutor noted, which led to small mistakes accumulating on assessments.

In senior economics, a Year 12 struggled with structuring business report evaluations and sometimes neglected reviewing class notes for macroeconomic concepts.

One Year 9 English student read quickly but overlooked grammatical errors and failed to organise ideas clearly in written responses, impacting both comprehension and expression.

Recent Achievements

One Mortlake tutor noticed real shifts across different year levels recently. In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to skip showing his working out, but now consistently sets it out for problems he can't do mentally, which has helped him catch errors before moving on.

In senior Business Studies, Kai moved from mostly descriptive writing to crafting more analytical paragraphs in his reports after targeted feedback—he now explains cause and effect instead of just listing facts.

Meanwhile, Zarraf (Year 6 English) went from hesitating to share ideas aloud to making thoughtful predictions about challenging texts and backing them up with details from the story.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Both my sons, were tutored by Adam. We were very happy with his work. John has now finished school and is in his second year at University where he doing very well. We stopped seeing Adam when Paul started to get A+ marks in Maths and did not require extra support. Paul will finish Year 12 this year and we are told by his school that he should receive excellent marks. We were impressed with the communication between ourselves and your team.

Patrick is a wonderful asset to your company.  It pleases me so much that Patrick has a wonderful understanding of my Son capabilities with in only 5 lessons. Thank you for sending Patrick to us.

Mike has been great and very patient with Chelsea.  Most importantly Chelsea is feeling comfortable with him and starting to open up and ask questions. He is also very organised and we are really happy.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
