I think it is very important as a physics tutor to start a topic from its basic and build a strong idea of the subject material so that the student enjoys studying. That is going to boost up the student's confidence on the subject. I can not stress enough about the importance of building confidence in a student. I am very patient with my students…

Not to force feed content, but take an approach from a different angle of two if the first method does not work. Some understand content from different view points while some get it first try. Other than that, encouragement and support is the other driving factor which will help them want to do better and achieve more. I am patient, organised and…

I believe the most important thing a physics tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. This may sound intuitive however it is often majorly overlooked and replaced with acceptance or shear memorisation for the student. What I want is for my students is a true understanding of the subject, giving them the tools of learning so that they…

A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas a physics tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with…

The most important thing is helping someone develop a passion for the subject so that they want to learn more. Studying for exams can get very stressful and students forget the joy of learning something and their natural curiosity. If a physics tutor can help a student retain even a small percentage of that, its an amazing achievement. Most of the…

Adapt to their needs. As a tutor, your job is to assist in their learning experience, and get growth from the student. There is no one way to teach that is effective for everyone. Inside MortlakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on adding and subtracting fractions, then practiced multiplying and dividing both mixed and improper fractions using visual aids.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on expanding brackets in algebraic expressions and began factorising basic expressions for homework support.

For Year 11, Olivia reviewed the strategic role of financial management along with objectives of finance and explored the interdependence between finance and other business functions within her Commerce studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student often rushed to answers without showing step-by-step working, especially in algebra and inequalities—this made it hard to spot sign errors or missing pronumerals. "He tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working," a tutor noted, which led to small mistakes accumulating on assessments.

In senior economics, a Year 12 struggled with structuring business report evaluations and sometimes neglected reviewing class notes for macroeconomic concepts.

One Year 9 English student read quickly but overlooked grammatical errors and failed to organise ideas clearly in written responses, impacting both comprehension and expression.

Recent Achievements

One Mortlake tutor noticed real shifts across different year levels recently. In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to skip showing his working out, but now consistently sets it out for problems he can't do mentally, which has helped him catch errors before moving on.

In senior Business Studies, Kai moved from mostly descriptive writing to crafting more analytical paragraphs in his reports after targeted feedback—he now explains cause and effect instead of just listing facts.

Meanwhile, Zarraf (Year 6 English) went from hesitating to share ideas aloud to making thoughtful predictions about challenging texts and backing them up with details from the story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
