The most important thing I can do as a tutor would be building a sense of connection and trust with them and be a friend or mentor who can help them understand their own strengths and help them learn new things in the best way possible. As a tutor, it is important to be able to understand what a student wishes to improve and what they're good at…

It is important to be compassionate and build rapport. It is also important to help students visualise problems and identify the student’s learning style so that they are able to present information in a way that has the greatest effect. The most important part of being a tutor is to provide support. I gain trust with my students by showing them that I am there to support them fully. I engage with them one on one and ensure that there is truly no question 'too stupid' that they cannot ask me for help with. I find over time how the student personally learns and work with their own…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to find out the student's learning method and try to adapt to that. Everyone learns differently and tutoring should be focused on helping the student in the best possible way that they can receive. I can easily adapt to new situations and environments which will help since every…

A tutor should spend time to listen to the needs of the student and spend time to build the students confidence in their own ability. By being a listener and confidence builder, this can inspire the student to tackle challenging and difficult problems and questions therefore imparting not just academic skills but life skills as well. Having empathy to relate with students as well as discipline. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand the student's learning style and being able to adapt accordingly. Listening is the most important thing a tutor can do for the student. Tutors cannot understand a student's requirements and expectations until they effectively give time to the student for communicating the same. However, listening alone does not suffice. A tutor must act on these requirements and prepare custom learning plans. Being someone who…

It is important to be patient with a student; they won't always understand what is being taught and as a tutor you need to be able to explain something in a way that they will understand the concept. I think it's also crucial that the tutor is organised; arrives a few minutes early and knows what they will be going through and brings any…

Inside Mosman ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages as well as tackling percentage word problems using real-life scenarios.

In Year 9, Sophie focused on understanding circle theorems—solving problems involving tangents and alternate segment theorem, and practicing correct mathematical notation.

For Year 10, Marcus consolidated skills in sketching parabolas by completing the square and identifying key features from turning point form, also using discriminant rules for axis of symmetry.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student faced challenges with time management in tests, often leaving complex calculus questions unfinished; as one tutor observed, "he needed to plan which problems to tackle first but ran out of time."

In Year 8, another student's working was described as "messy and hard to follow," especially during algebra tasks—key steps were skipped on paper, making it tough to track errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner forgot to complete homework on subtraction with borrowing, so most of the lesson was spent revisiting old ground rather than building new skills. This slowed overall progress and left them feeling frustrated by the end.

Recent Achievements

One Mosman Park tutor saw a Year 11 student move from hesitating over critical points in functions to independently finding x- and y-intercepts and confidently identifying maxima and minima without prompting.

A Year 9 student who used to skip over tricky worded ratio problems now tries each question solo before asking for help, neatly setting out her solutions and catching her own errors.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, Jimmy has shifted from guessing during subtraction to actively voicing his doubts and using a checklist he created to avoid place value mistakes—he finished the session by solving all borrowing questions unaided for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman Park Primary School.
