As a maths tutor what I can do is to build the confidence of students for the subjects which he or she is struggling with. Give them zero confusion and make everything as easy as possible. I have worked as a lecturer at both state and private sector universities in my home country for more than two years. So I can feel what students' mind is…

I would say one of the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is to show them the compassion and support they need to gain self-confidence and realise their full potential. In my previous tutoring groups, I would often have students who felt like they would never be good academically, and this was simply not true. All that had…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is ensure they understand what they are doing. As a result it is crucial for a tutor to prepare the correct material for the student. It is crucial that a tutor guides the student rather than just helping them get their homework done. Teach a man to fish and he has food for the rest of…

As a student myself I believe it is vital to have a level of understanding and patience when assisting with a child's learning as this develops a safe and healthy learning environment. Aside from my extensive understanding of mathematics and physics, I believe that my personal attributes of empathy, and strong listening and communication skills…

It is super important for children to feel like they are doing well, and making progress. I think that as a maths tutor, encouragement is the most important tool that a tutor can use. If the students are not encouraged, they will no longer be motivated to keep trying, and will therefore not improve. My biggest strength as a tutor is my patience.…

I think that an important thing for a maths tutor to do is to be available, even if it be through technology or in person. As a student, I understand that sometimes it may just be a singular question that gets you down, or in other cases an entire unit. Hence, being able to support all circumstances is imperative. Another important factor is…

Inside Mount BarkerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sophie focused on multiplying large numbers and building confidence with times tables, as well as tackling equivalent fractions and worded fraction problems using games for reinforcement.

Year 7 student Annabelle worked through interpreting probability worksheets from school and practiced creating graphs from tables, then extracting data to answer questions.

Sydney, also in Year 4, strengthened her multiplication and division skills using targeted worksheets and explored fractional equivalence, including representing fractions on number lines.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often felt overwhelmed by multi-step maths questions, sometimes giving up quickly if too much information was presented.

In algebra tasks, "she skipped reading the full question and missed key details," leading to avoidable mistakes.

During a senior fractions lesson, another student rushed through calculations without checking their work, resulting in repeated errors with decimal conversions.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student was reluctant to finish homework when tired but completed it with encouragement.

For one Year 9 learner, seeking constant reassurance slowed progress—each answer was checked before moving on.

When tiredness hit after school events, focus drifted and working became inconsistent.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Barker noticed Jay has started catching his own mistakes during division without prompting—last term he'd often just guess and move on.

Sophie, also in high school, showed real initiative by preparing her own revision cheat sheet before the lesson even began, something she hadn't tried previously.

In primary sessions, Annabelle moved from hesitating over multi-step word problems to quickly breaking them down and explaining her reasoning out loud.

Jay wrapped up by tackling all ten times tables rows independently for the first time this term.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Everything is going well with Dexter. Jordana gets on really well with her, and finds Dexter explains things very clearly, and has been a great help already with her understanding of Maths.

Jakob and Cara have a great working relationship and cover alot of content in each session. Cara's confidence and maths skills have grown considerably since commencing tutoring.

Amity is enjoying her tutouring. She is very pleased as she recently received an academic award at school meaning she had received A for all subjects for last term. So we are very happy with Xiaoya.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Barker Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cornerstone College.
