The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill a sense of confidence in the student about their own ability. The tutor can demonstrate to the student that they can achieve their different goals and help them achieve these. The tutor can also create a plan to show the student how to goal will be achieved. This will create a…

1. Providing a figure of support - It's important that a student feels comfortable asking their tutor questions and knows that they will be taken seriously no matter how simple the question may seem. 2. Encouragement - It's easy for students to lose confidence when they can't understand something, and as a tutor it's important that you can help…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have patience. Understanding that each student is different and that it's necessary to adapt to their pace in order to achieve results. I feel that I have always had a certain ease in teaching something to people when compared to most of them trying to convey knowledge. I believe it's…

The most important things I can do for a student is to come prepared and organised to lessons. Making the most of my time with the student is essential to help the student gain the most advantage from tutoring. In high school some of the tutors I had made lessons very boring and awkward hence why I also ensure lessons are fun and safe for my…

Help them understand and not let them feel helpless. A lot of kids feel helpless when learning and it's extremely important for tutors to let them know that they aren't and teach them other ways to learn that are more helpful for them. My strengths are most definitely adapting to any situation and my patience. I understand that people may struggle…

I think as a tutor it is important to make sure your students feel safe and supported at all times. It is also important to not belittle students but rather always encourage them no matter what. Teaching students how to eventually become independent learners is also very important. I think my strengths as a tutor are my solid foundation of the…

A good tutor can change the student's mindset and make them better people. Having a good tutor makes the subject automatically interesting and students tend to invest more time and put more effort into it. I am a very patient and dedicated person. It is important for tutors to explain the concept in a way that gives the student true understanding rather than just a shortcut for test questions. This way the student can apply that knowledge to different situations. I've tutored my younger siblings throughout school so I'm good at working with kids who like to complain that it's too hard. I'm…

Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of their…

A tutor needs to have a good understanding of the content to help cater to the students' needs. By suggesting or providing different resources (e.g. alternative text books, handouts, video clips or study cards), the student can widen their methods of learning and access to resources. A tutor needs to be a relatable individual, who gets along…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be understanding. Passion and patience will always come up first. No matter how good the strategy is, if a tutor doesn't have passion on teaching and patience to get along with students, students won't be able to improve efficiently. Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. Inside Mount ClaremontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jack worked through fractions and percentages, using visual models to build confidence with calculations.

For Year 10, Emily focused on all types of quadratic equations, including factorising, completing the square, and graphing quadratics from word problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on exam revision by tackling practice questions involving linear functions and inequalities as well as a variety of trigonometry problems, especially those featuring bearings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 trigonometry, a tutor noted "he needs to learn how to apply the methods taught, not just use them," highlighting a reliance on formulas without connecting concepts—this left him uncertain in non-standard problems.

In Year 11, one student struggled with test planning: "James should also learn to only spend a mark a minute on questions in order to not spend too much time on one solution," leading to unfinished sections despite knowing the material.

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, incomplete written working and missing steps meant errors went unnoticed until revision, which delayed improvement and created frustration during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

In Mount Claremont, a high school student who used to get stuck on quadratic equations is now confidently converting them to turning point form and tackling tougher textbook problems without hesitation.

Another older student, who previously struggled with showing his working out, has started writing out each step clearly instead of trying to solve everything mentally—a change that's made a real difference in his test results.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once guessed at fraction questions now asks for help when unsure, leading her to correctly add and subtract fractions on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Claremont Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John XXIII College.
