I think its their ability to motivate students is very important, by giving them a different perspective. I am easy talk to and very understandable, taking the time to explain difficult concepts it in a way that a student is familiar with is easy! Also as I have just graduated in 2022, I am very familiar with test structures and content throughout…

One of the most important thing to do is to understand what the student needs. Through careful evaluation a tutor should identify the student's weakness and put more focus on that area. Another important thing is to always address their questions. Sometimes my students asked me questions which I did not know the answer to, so I looked up on the…

I reckon the most crucial role for a tutor is to inspire a love for learning by making lessons interesting and relevant. Encourage the student to explore subjects beyond the curriculum and develop a genuine curiosity is really important. Besides, breaking down complex topics into manageable parts and explain them in a way that the student can…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

This can mean different things for different students, so depending on the goals and needs of the students we can together curate a study plan for success. It is important to build a relationship with the student and to always guide them but not push them to their limits. It is also important that the student understands how its done, while having them memorise a pattern is easy, allowing them to understand how to solve these types of questions will allow them to apply their solution to more things.…

A tutor does not just teach a student a particular subject. I believe that the most important function of a tutor is to foster overall academic confidence in a student and to develop better study techniques/learning habits more generally. A good tutor can give a student motivation and techniques to achieve not only in the tutored subject, but in…

I think that, as I said earlier, building confidence is an important thing, so that students can be self-sufficient. I also think that when they take pride in their work, they can achieve beyond their own expectations. I have a lot of experience in coaching children in soccer (aged 2-12) and I also have two sisters aged 7 and 17. I think that…

First and foremost it would be building a strong rapport with the student and gaining mutual trust and respect. This builds a foundation of confidence and comfort which optimises a students ability to learn and their attitude towards learning. Tutors should be adaptable and be able to target the teaching to each students unique way of learning. …

The most important thing that a tutor can do is understand their student’s weakness and strengths and work on them and use them respectively. The major role is guidance. Showing them that it is just not about passing exams and good grades but the knowledge and values remain with you until lifetime. Hence a tutor can be the one that guides a…

Inside Mount ClaremontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jack worked through fractions and percentages, using visual models to build confidence with calculations.

For Year 10, Emily focused on all types of quadratic equations, including factorising, completing the square, and graphing quadratics from word problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on exam revision by tackling practice questions involving linear functions and inequalities as well as a variety of trigonometry problems, especially those featuring bearings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 trigonometry, a tutor noted "he needs to learn how to apply the methods taught, not just use them," highlighting a reliance on formulas without connecting concepts—this left him uncertain in non-standard problems.

In Year 11, one student struggled with test planning: "James should also learn to only spend a mark a minute on questions in order to not spend too much time on one solution," leading to unfinished sections despite knowing the material.

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, incomplete written working and missing steps meant errors went unnoticed until revision, which delayed improvement and created frustration during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

In Mount Claremont, a high school student who used to get stuck on quadratic equations is now confidently converting them to turning point form and tackling tougher textbook problems without hesitation.

Another older student, who previously struggled with showing his working out, has started writing out each step clearly instead of trying to solve everything mentally—a change that's made a real difference in his test results.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once guessed at fraction questions now asks for help when unsure, leading her to correctly add and subtract fractions on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Claremont Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John XXIII College.
