Physics Tutor Mount Helen, VIC
A tutor should help a student feel confident in their abilities, and ensure the student understands. A tutor should also help students find intrinsic motivation, help them find a reason to study that comes from their own goals and aspirations, rather than having study feel like a chore. I focus on fundamental understanding, and try to find gaps in…

Inside Mount PleasantTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Greta focused on operations with fractions and decimals, including addition, subtraction, and conversions, as well as practice with BEDMAS and interpreting mixed-format worded maths problems.

Year 8 student Zac worked through algebraic techniques such as solving linear equations using reverse order of operations and expanding expressions, along with integer arithmetic revision.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia concentrated on trigonometry by labelling triangle sides for sin, cos, and tan ratios and rearranging equations to solve for unknowns using a calculator.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, skipping steps when solving fraction problems led to repeated confusion with subtraction and division—"she answered for addition instead," noted one tutor.

Written work was sometimes unclear, making it difficult to spot where a process went wrong or whether a digit was simply miscopied.

In Year 10 trigonometry, uncertainty about when to apply the cosine rule appeared after forgetting notes at home, leading to hesitation during test preparation.

Meanwhile, in senior algebra (Year 11), an over-reliance on intuition instead of checking each step meant factoring errors persisted and time was lost retracing calculations mid-session.

Recent Achievements

One Mount Pleasant tutor noticed a Year 8 student who previously froze at multi-step algebra now choosing to tackle challenging powers questions herself, and even explaining her thinking when she got stuck—something she used to avoid.

In a recent high school maths session, another student finally mastered using SOH CAH TOA for trigonometry, quickly labelling triangle sides and independently deciding which ratio to use—a big leap from needing step-by-step guidance before.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by reading aloud expressively during poetry, engaging with unfamiliar words rather than shying away, and asking to try the next poem on her own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Chloe is fantastic. Jasmine enjoys the maths time in the way chloe has set it out. Jas has already made progress and chloe helps building her confidence. She is wonderful thank you so much.

Blake seems to enjoy his tutoring so far, as you said it can take a few lessons to really get settled.

Only had one tutoring session at this stage however very helpful with an A+ outcome for maths exam on Friday.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sebastopol Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Pleasant Primary School.
