The most important thing a biology tutor can do for their student is to understand how a student learns and behaves, then processes information and implement teaching strategies accordingly to these behaviours. Creating a safe and positive environment for learning is imperative to a student's ability to properly process information as motivation…

I believe the most important role a biology tutor plays is to establish a friendly relationship with the student. This makes learning more engaging and achievable. My previous tutoring experience has shown me that students learn best when they are engaged more personally. For example, relating concepts to the hobbies of a student allows them to…

As a biology tutor, it is essential to establish a learning space where students feel comfortable to ask questions and clarify ideas to ensure understanding of concepts. I strive to create a welcoming environment by reassuring students of their strengths while helping them work on their weaknesses and aim higher. As a tutor, I am very flexible to…

I believe the most important things a biology tutor can do for a student are to be friendly and make sure they feel welcome. It's also important to make sure the student is understanding the content and if they aren't to reiterate the points or try to teach them in another way. My strengths as a tutor are that I am highly organised and prepared, I…

I consider confidence to be the most important thing I can give to a student as I believe every student has the capability of doing well in any subject, but belief in themselves is needed. Upon starting year 11, I really struggled at chemistry, majorly. But thankfully I had the best tutor that pushed me and gave me the drive & self-belief to…

Be empathetic... Often students are going through a lot more than just school and/or sport, and sometimes tutors do not realise this when they're loading them with a lot of information. By being empathetic and patient that tutor is able to consider that needs of the student and alter sessions accordingly to ensure the greatest bang for the buck. I…

The most important thing for a biology tutor to do is to inspire their students to do their best and support them during difficult periods of exams and works such as getting bad marks or struggling with a hard assignment. A tutor should support their student and help them become better with each lesson and also not let a bad mark discourage them…

Firstly identifying the student's various strengths and areas of improvement is very significant to give a general idea of which topics to focus/skills on the most whilst teaching them. Another key area that a biology tutor should investigate further is the student's most effective way of learning specific concepts e.g. visual, written, auditory…

Teach them how to study. I feel that too many students think the only way to study is to read the text book or talk to the teacher. Although these are valid ways I feel that most students don't realise there are other ways to study. I personal prefer to watch videos explaining the subject, draw pictures and diagrams, and then make flash cards.…

Subsequently, tutors should teach students the concepts and ensure they understand how to solve problems, this provides lifelong problem solving skills rather than memorised methods to…

Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that they reach their full potential. I think…

I consider the most important that a tutor can do is able to do is simply a topic or break down said topic into digestible portions such that the student is able to catch onto the content of the work easily and effectively. With a good understanding of the topic and the skills to explain its contents to the student, the tutor ensures that the…

Inside Mount RiverviewTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Daniel worked on interpreting and creating stem-and-leaf plots, then practiced identifying the mean, median, and mode using small data sets.

In Year 8, Alexia focused on simplifying algebraic expressions by both multiplying and dividing terms as well as tackling worded problems involving ratios with fractions and decimals.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mark revised financial maths by calculating taxable income and GST through worksheet practice to prepare for his upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, revision outside of lessons was often missed—this led to concepts like tax calculations and measurement bounds being forgotten by the next session.

As one tutor observed, "she still needs to work on calculating taxable income and Medicare levy to become more confident."

In Year 8, skipping regular review meant difficulty recalling methods for algebraic expressions; errors crept in when sign conventions weren't double-checked.

A Year 3 student's messy letter formation made it hard to distinguish between 'j' and 'i', causing hesitation during reading tasks.

These habits left students retracing old ground instead of moving forward with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Mount Riverview tutor noticed a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now speaks up when stuck, especially during algebra lessons—she recently tackled dividing equations after expressing her confusion and then completed the task on her own.

In Year 10, another student moved from making errors in percentage calculations to accurately converting fractions and decimals into percentages using different strategies without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary learner has shifted from guessing words when reading aloud to pausing and sounding out unfamiliar ones, showing patience where he used to rush through.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you for your email. Ben and David are working well together and it appears that the working relationship is positive. Interestingly, Ben has instantly been able to move to working with David as both David and Ben have in common the same secondary school that Ben is currently going to. So while David attended the school some years prior to Ben, and much has change, they were still able to compare experiences about the school which helped start them working constructively. We are very satisfied with continuing with David.

Yes so far we are happy with Emma. The reason we want the tutoring is that I would like Stephanie to be extended in a similar way to that which coaching colleges follow ie they seem to follow the curriculum of selective schools. I would like Stephanie to have the same opportunity to be extended. Since the coaching colleges are inconvenient for us, we much prefer to have a tutor like Emma.

Tanay enjoys learning with Curtis which is a great thing so I am sure he will listen to what Curtis has to tell him.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blaxland Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Riverview Public School.
