A tutor should do more than simply teach a subject for a student. A tutor is an individual that can encourage others to act at their best, this can be in the academic field but can extend to other aspects of life as well. A tutor's most important goal should always be understanding, and if possible, relating to the circumstances of each of their…

To guide them towards their journey towards reaching goals and aspirations. Due to the education system constantly pushing students through grades regardless of results as well as very little discussion and revision upon mistakes after testing, I find helping a student be able to not only understand the individual question, but on top of that…

A tutor must help the student to overcome his fears and apprehensions and grow his confidence. Must improve the student's knowledge of the subject, develop an interest in the subject and help him to the challenge of reaching his maximum potential. I am reliable and dependable. I have the ability to build a good relationship with the students and…

Being a friend! Most students whom I’ve thought have confessed they gained more knowledge from me as they considered me to be more than a teacher as I had a great understanding from their point of view and tried to do more in class and reduce workload at home to balance their lives and education. In the meantime I’ve managed the time and…

Being able to teach the student not only about academics, but also preparing them for what is to come. I know from recent personal observatory experience how difficult starting Highschool is, and how large of a jump that is. I can also relate to the jump from year 10 to VCE, it is difficult and extremely stressful! The most important thing a tutor…

Patient. Patience is key when it comes to teaching younger people something new, especially if they are not good at it. A good tutor will always be patients and find multiple action plans for their students to achieve the end result. I am able to explain concepts very fluently and provide examples to ensure the students have the best understanding…

Understanding Empathizing I believe in teaching mathematics with empathy, understanding that every student learns at their own pace. I create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as I see them as essential steps in the learning process. My first priority would be to make sure the student is clear about what the problem is all about before trying to solve it. I would ensure that I give the student enough time and space to explore the subject or any particular content of it to understand it, instead up hurrying him/her through the process. My focus would be to help him/her…

Guidance. Knowledge would be useless without proper action. It's also a tutor's duty to encourage application of said knowledge so that they can use their own academic achievement to improve their lives, and help the world a better place. I think first and foremost is adaptability. 2. Discipline comes after once you get adapted. 3. Communication with easing out the complex concepts. 4. Listening their problems and catering on them. 5. A teacher has to be patient while working with a student 6. At last but not least, humility is one of the most important thing when it comes…

The most important thing a tutor can do a for student is to understand his/her behaviour, weakness and strengths. Create a two way interaction, and teach the students in a more interactive and practical way, to create a better understanding. and try to help students in converting their weakness into strengths. 1. A good tutor must be able to understand the needs of the student. Every students has his/her own level and it is very important for a good tutor to recognise that level. A tutor can be more than a person that just helps with a particular subject. They should be willing to change their way of thinking for each student that they teach and know that patience is the key to help students reach their ultimate goal. They should act as a role model and be able to give feedback on how to cope with the pressures of school…

I believe one of the most vital things that tutors can do is alter their teaching type based on different students' abilities and progression over time. I think this helps differentiate tutoring from normal schooling as normal schooling is generalised for all students and doesn't cater for individual students' strengths and weaknesses. I believe…

1. A tutor should understand the different needs of different students and find a way of teaching that best suits them. So preparing suitable material for different students are very important. 2. Never teach to the test. It not only diminishes the student’s interest in the subject but also prevents them from developing further understanding…

There are different ways in which a person will understand. Hence, a good tutor should know which approach to use so that studies become fun and concepts become their partners for life time. - Innovative…

Local Reviews

I've had a wonderful experience with this tutoring service. It's so easy to connect with the team—whether you prefer picking up the phone or sending an email, the client service representatives are quick to respond. They provide a clear overview of expectations and requirements, and then you can sit back while they take care of matching your child with the right tutor. The convenience of having sessions at home, at a time that fits your schedule, really helps relieve the stress of managing other responsibilities. The trial session before committing makes it easy to ensure you're paired with the right person to meet your child's individual needs. After that, it's just a simple process to reallocate sessions and you're good to go—everyone's happy. I also appreciate the discount for paying upfront for sessions. The representatives are always easy to connect with, and they follow up to make sure everything is going smoothly. We've been really pleased with the tutors assigned to us, and it's clear the team takes time to carefully match tutors based on our needs. Overall, a great experience!

Inside Mount WaverleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jessica worked on plotting linear graphs, including handling multiple lines on a single Cartesian plane, and used real examples to understand gradients and intercepts.

In Year 10, Ryan focused on quadratic equations by practicing completing the square and explored graphing parabolas with dilations and translations.

For Year 12, Ethan revised differentiation techniques such as the chain, product, and quotient rules and applied these skills to solve application questions from past exam papers.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Specialist Maths, a student waited until the last day to complete homework on simultaneous equations, leading to forgotten steps and gaps in recall—"by which she has forgotten what we learned last week."

In VCE Methods revision, another learner avoided writing full working or using correct notation when tackling calculus and graphing tasks; equal signs and logical layout were often missing, making it harder to track errors or secure marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 session revealed distraction from mobile phones during lessons, with note-taking left incomplete and explanations needing extra time to land. The result: confusion lingers where clarity was needed most.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Waverley noticed a big shift with one Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitating to speak up, started asking for clarification whenever something was unclear—especially during tricky calculus problems.

Another high school student, previously overwhelmed by her school's approach, surprised herself by requesting extra homework at the end of the session and tackling it independently.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed real initiative: she now catches her own mistakes in maths without prompting and even laughs about "silly errors" instead of getting discouraged. Last week, she redid all her practice questions solo after reviewing the method together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Monash Public Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Family School.
