This includes teaching study skills, time management, and organizational strategies that can help students become more independent and successful learners. I can…

The key to a successful tutor-student partnership is instilling confidence in the student, reducing stress, and catering specifically to the needs of the individual. A great tutor doesn't just explain how to get through the work; they listen and encourage students to ask questions so that students recognize that they can succeed even when they…

I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. They should be able to ask as many questions as possible and make them think and learn about problem solving. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. One of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is listen. I have seen in my experience that sometimes students have unsolved doubts because their class teacher or tutor does not properly listen to them and fail to comprehend these queries. Anybody can be knowledgable on any topic or chapter but what really helps a student is if…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. A tutor can be skilled, and well educated, but if a student does not enjoy the process of being taught in a manner that which leaves them academically unsatisfied, or frustrated, then their potential is…

I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

Also, as a tutor due to the one on one time you get with a student you are able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of that student and help them accordingly. I'd also say that having patience with a student is important as this allows the student…

Inside MulgraveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 Oscar reviewed circle theorems involving intersecting chords, secants and tangents, as well as tackled sketching parabolas to build confidence in algebraic graphing.

For Year 7 Hayley, sessions focused on strengthening her grasp of the distributive property and using visual approaches to clarify key math operations.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Hayley practiced explaining her problem-solving steps from a recent test and explored logic-based activities like Rebus puzzles and story riddles to enhance critical thinking alongside mathematics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student did not bring class notebooks or show workings with homework; "did not have workings to the homework I have given so reassigned it, to be completed with workings." This made it hard to spot where confusion started in algebra.

A Year 7 student avoided word problems, losing motivation when faced with longer questions—especially in story riddles—so didn't get full exposure to key reasoning skills.

In VCE maths, another relied heavily on notes and rarely attempted questions independently during revision sessions, leading to missed feedback opportunities before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Mulgrave tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to link math to real-life scenarios now using calculations confidently in the context of his athletic training, even initiating discussions about applying statistics from sports science.

In a recent high school session, Hayley identified where she typically lost track in multi-step linear equations and independently developed an organised approach that helped her resolve several story riddles without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to avoid worded math problems now spots her own errors as she explains solutions aloud and manages to answer parts of challenging written questions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John Vianney's School.
