I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide clear explanations in order to prevent doubts and misunderstandings, by breaking down complex concepts in manageable steps and to adapt to the student's learning preferences. Ultimately, in my opinion, a tutor’s goal is to equip students with the necessary tools and…

Most important according to me a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable enough so that a student is able to ask doubts without being hesitant and is able to share all the problems that they might be facing. I am an incredibly sharp observer. If a pupil is able to understand what I taught, that is something I can definitely…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to build up their students' confidence in their own abilities so that they can begin to work to solve problems on their own, and to support them as they grow into their full potential. I have a lot of knowledge and passion for the subjects I would tutor which would help to encourage that same passion and…

I think a tutor should always: - be patient with students - don't hesitate to reexplain if he thinks they don't understand well - give them motivation and show them they are capable of doing their work I have a patient, friendly, helpful and dynamic personality. I think these are essential personality traits to become a…

Tutors are in a position not only to impart knowledge, but most importantly, to model curiousity to learn and showing his/ her students what it looks like to be passionate about a subject, discipline, or anything! By doing so, tutors are also able to actively show, and amplify, their students ability and confidence to improve and excel in whatever…

A tutor needs to help the student learn to enjoy a subject, and not treat it like a burden. One of the most important things a tutor can do is to help the student become more confident and capable when it comes to studying. They need to make learning fun, while carefully building up the necessary studying skills in the student. Creating an open…

Being a school student myself not too long ago, I think it is important to ensure that the student feels comfortable with you and is able to open up about any doubts or questions they have without feeling like it's an unnecessary question. Being available for them and understanding the best way they learn, while adapting your teaching method is…

I believe that it is extremely important for tutors to follow the students closely in their understanding, instead of a general form of teaching as this helps to lay a good groundwork for students to be able to practice their learnings and understand the content in a deeper level. An important way this can done is by being continuously available…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to enjoy learning. In the bottom line, every student must learn the subject to be able to achieve their goal; it can be to simply pass the subject or score above 90%. Because of them having to do the subject anyways, it is important to show them that learning is not…

Find ways to make not just the student but me myself as a tutor actually enjoy learning the subject in a rather fun and different manner. I believe it is being a mentor and the light at the end of the tunnel. It is a stressful time and there are a lot of adults constantly reiterating how important it is to get good grades. I believe tutors can be that alternate perspective that students may need to get that motivation to succeed. Apart from this, it is about giving the student the…

Have an appreciation for their unique learning style. Every child learns differently and is passionate about learning different things. Give them tools to increase their confidence! A tutor is there as a support system; they're there to provide the one-on-one attention a classroom teacher is unable to provide, and to clarify, reinforce, and adapt classroom teaching so that students get the most out of their learning. Inside MurrumbeenaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily focused on simplifying fractions and practising multiplication facts up to 10, using visual aids for support.

Year 7 student Ava tackled linear equations and explored plotting points on the Cartesian plane, including drawing straight-line graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ethan worked through trigonometry concepts such as bearings and distances, as well as calculating surface area and volume of composite shapes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student left their homework incomplete and was "easily distracted," often rushing through fractions and worded problems without full confidence, as one tutor observed.

In a Year 8 algebra session, skipping steps when solving equations led to small errors—practicing showing all working became necessary for test preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student relied on back-checking answers but occasionally misapplied formulas before correcting themselves.

The struggle to commit times tables to memory persisted in Year 5; repeated revision was needed as material was quickly forgotten, leading to frequent revisiting of the same multiplication concepts week after week.

Recent Achievements

One Murrumbeena tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle statistics problems alone—she completed her entire homework set without needing prompts.

In Year 12, another student who used to second-guess herself with complex loan calculations is now confidently comparing interest rates and can choose the most cost-effective loan on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled to show his maths working has started organising each step clearly in his book instead of skipping ahead, finishing all ten practice questions accurately for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Murrumbeena Primary School.
