Do not try to impose the thought that he believes the correct solution and try to explain to the student how to arrive at the reasoning that gives the answer. I consider that I have a fairly dense knowledge in mathematics and I am able to approach problems from different perspectives to ensure that the student understands it. I am also quite…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show an interest in their ability to learn the material. Connecting with a student in this way, even when the student seems nonreceptive, will be motivational in my experience. Furthermore, demonstrating pitfalls in problems or areas of difficulty in a clear way is crucial as it impacts…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is affirm their self-worth as a learner and as an individual. It can be frustrating not being able to figure something out, but it becomes a lot less daunting without extreme expectations. I think my strengths as a tutor lie in my patience and my creativity. It's certainly not an easy task learning…

It is so important for tutors to adapt their method of teaching to the way the student learns. Every student not only has different needs and difficulties, but learns concepts differently. It is extremely important to regularly re-evaluate the student's objectives. Modifying your approach as a tutor to make the student feel comfortable and…

Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. I am an expert in Math and Programming and their academic content -- I know the subject's concepts, ideas and problems inside out. I…

Make sure they learn the work in a way that they understand and set the student up for long term success both in the subject I will tutor them in and in life. A tutor should be able to instill skills that will serve the students so well, both in academics and in life that they will no longer require help from us. I am very patient and non-judgemental when it comes to tutoring. I always try to put myself in my student's shoes, observe and try to cater to their needs, while making sure the quality of the…

A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure that the child fully understands the lesson, and finds purpose in it. If it's a correct match of a student and a teacher, then definitely a tutor can change the overall personality of his student and in turn learn from him as well. Inside NaremburnTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Nick focused on identifying outliers and calculating standard deviation in data sets, as well as analysing box-plot graphs.

In Year 10, Emily worked through quadratic equations—solving by factorising and graphing parabolas—and also practised simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Olivia tackled logarithms, including laws of logarithms and their application to polynomials, along with some targeted test revision ahead of her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's graphing work was noted as "messy," making it harder to spot calculation errors or follow their reasoning under test conditions.

For a senior student tackling statistics, over-reliance on written notes during trigonometry practice limited confidence when formulas were not provided—"relies on notes to complete the questions."

Meanwhile, in Year 11 English, a reluctance to write linking sentences led to repeated arguments rather than clear analysis; as observed: "he merely rewrote the question into a vague answer without incorporating explanations."

In each case, clarity and independent working impacted performance in both maths and English tasks.

Recent Achievements

In high school maths, George has moved from needing help with quadratics to independently tackling the most difficult test-style questions, even handling extension problems that previously caused confusion.

Another student, Lilian, used to rely on step-by-step support for equations but now works through multi-step algebraic questions without guidance and is starting to manipulate both sides of equations confidently.

Meanwhile, Nick in Year 7 English shifted from basic paragraph writing to crafting two full PEEL paragraphs using evidence and thoughtful analysis after initially struggling to structure his ideas.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I would love to offer some feedback on Derek. I discussed this response with Jaidan last night and he requested that I let you know that he thinks Derek is AWESOME. From my observations,Derek quickly created a great rapport with Jaidan which is important for effective communication. I have queried Jaidan after each session and feel that he is benefitting greatly from Derek's input. He is feeling more confident and very comfortable to source support from Derek. I could not ask for more at this stage so thank you and more importantly please thank Derek on my behalf.

For now, we won't be continuing but we haven't ruled it out for the future.  We were very happy with your service and Jade is a beautiful person!  She has helped Keegan with her confidence in Maths and helped improve her grade this year.  We postponed tutoring at the end of term 1 because Jade had covered as much as she could before introducing new work, which we didn't want to do until it came up in school.  Therefore, we had a break to see how Keegan went, and she's had no problems thus far. If any problems pop up this term, I plan to get in contact with you and Jade ASAP!

Aiden is really happy with Faraz. He felt a bit awkward the first week but the interactions were much better the second week. Aiden finds it very useful because he needs guided revision (it's not necessarily about learning the content). Definitely a good investment!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Naremburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SHORE - Sydney Church of England Preparatory School, Northbridge.
