I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the subject in their level of understanding and teach them the fundamentals. Sometimes it can be a challenge to explain some advanced theories especially to young minds but if we teach them to master the basics, then it would be easier for them to grasp future lessons. I…

I personally consider the interactive and "adaptive" aspects of being a tutor to be the most important things a tutor can do for their student. In my opinion, keeping the student engaged, such as through mini breaks or games between long sessions of work, is the most effective way of teaching them in a fun, yet informative manner. Moreover, being…

A tutor should understand a student's struggle and achievements, and be able to bring out the fun in studying to help them in their academic struggles. I encourage and motivate students to excel and set a foundation for future studies, as well as providing an entertaining and educational environment suitable for each student. As a current student…

The tutor should be a mentor to their student, finding fulfillment and happiness in their student's success, while ensuring their goals and expectations are adhered to. Any student can find learning material and solutions online, hence to truly make a difference as a tutor it is essential to be encouraging to the student and have a will to work on…

A tutor must be able to connect with the student on many different levels whilst in the mean time also convey the concepts and ideas of the curriculum. I also believe that the tutor has a subjective responsibility toward each student, to be able to tailor a style of teaching for them because no two students are, or learn alike. My main strength as…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their students and the way they learn! This means bringing up different approaches to studying if one does not work for the student and ensuring that they are listened to and supported at all time! Tutors should not shame their students and work on more than just achieving…

A tutor should understand the student's ability and capacity of learning. Then the tutor should teach the student in a particular way to make him understand the lesson in his unique way. I think i'm empathetic, honest and enthusiastic as a tutor. I have a good listening ability. I encourages independence in student so that they do not rely on the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to take the time to understand who the student is. not every student learns the same way and the only way to effectively help someone is to take the time to know them first. The msot influential tutors that I have had have all been there for me beyond just amademically, but also as older people I can look to for advice on various things, and that is what I think a tutor needs to have as this also aids the teaching process because students are more likely to be involved if they enjoy the classes and have that…

Provide motivation and help develop a passion (or at least an appreciation) for Mathematics. Success would be more likely if the student is enjoying the subject matter. Furthering this; to teach the student confidence in their abilities and eventually be more independent in thier learning/study. It is also important that a tutor understand the…

Be available when the student needs it and care about the student's goals as much or more than the student. By knowing what the student needs, a tutor can identify the student's weaknesses and target them creatively. Quick to answer question with confidence to lead the student to success. Apart from my strengths, that I do think are important qualities to have as a tutor, being reliable in terms of having an answer to a student's question is important. I am good at problem solving so will generally handle such a situation well, but experience can make…

Inside Narre Warren EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Neva focused on writing up lab reports for chemical changes and applied her recent combustion experiment to improve her scientific writing.

Year 11 student Vien worked on developing a main argument for a practice English essay and practised rewording sentences for clarity in preparation for an upcoming SAC.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Dom revised exponential growth and decay in maths using exam-style questions, then switched to chemistry to balance equations involving ions forming molecules.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, there was hesitation to explore diverse examples in essay responses; as one tutor noted, "she tended to zone in on a single idea instead of thinking big picture."

In VCE Biology, difficulty organizing notes and remembering new symbols slowed progress during exam preparation.

During Year 7 Maths, working out where to start with worded questions sometimes led to confusion until prompted, meaning more time spent clarifying instructions than solving problems.

Meanwhile, in lower primary maths, number writing errors (like writing '102' for '120') occasionally caused calculation mistakes—especially when completing vertical addition tasks under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Narre Warren East noticed some great shifts lately: In Year 10, Vien had struggled to organise essay ideas but now can spot when a rewritten paragraph is clearer and confidently explains what he wrote on his SAC.

Neva, a Year 8 student, used to find lab report writing confusing—last week she applied the structure independently and completed key sections correctly.

Meanwhile, one primary student who previously guessed answers during maths has started raising her hand for help whenever stuck instead of staying silent or guessing. Last session, she read the next chapter out loud without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Hi Erica, Thanks for the follow up email.  Currently I am offshore and will be back in Perth around the 19th. I am sure Alex is going well, however time will tell.  Louise and Myself are happy with Safire.

We have got off to a great start with Devina.  Aiden has really enjoyed the sessions so far and finds Devina explains everything extremely well, actually much better than his teacher at school.  We are making really good progress and even after such a short time Aiden has gained so much more confidence with his maths,  so many thanks for sending her our way.

Timothy is very happy with how things are going with Jerome.  Tim feels like he is learning and is comfortable with Jerome who I have found to be a very polite young man.  Tim has not had any tests or exams since he began tutoring, I'm sure we will see an improvement at that time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belgrave Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dandenong Ranges Steiner School.
