I find it important for students to know and feel that their individual needs are heard, understood and attended to. It would be most important to follow through all plans, tailored to their needs, with actions that allow the students to realise their progress. By also validating their strengths and identifying their self-limiting beliefs, I…

Tutoring shouldn't just be limited to teaching the theory and just scribbling down some sums. I believe, at the end of the day, both the student and the tutor should have shared a learning experience which helps to reach their maximum. Motivating a student to reach the best in academics and their life, is the most important responsibility of a…

Understanding the Student’s Needs: Every student is unique, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. A good tutor takes the time to understand these aspects and tailors their teaching approach accordingly. Creating a Safe Learning Environment: Students should feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and expressing…

A tutor should be able to understand how they can help a student and should teach content or provide help in a way that suits their student's learning style. This would ensure that students are able to learn easier and with less stress. Students should not just be taught what to learn but also how to learn depending on the topic learnt, since it…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the subject in their level of understanding and teach them the fundamentals. Sometimes it can be a challenge to explain some advanced theories especially to young minds but if we teach them to master the basics, then it would be easier for them to grasp future lessons. I…

For a tutor to be an eloquent individual immersed with a wealth of knowledge it useless, if they do not frequently follow up with their students. It needs "regular maintenance" in car analogy. Tutoring is a marathon not a sprint. Tutors must hope to retain the students’ knowledge rather than sophisticatedly teach content without regular revision…

Most people's perception of the job of a tutor is always to guide a student to be successful in the study/subject. Although that is an important role as a tutor, I find the most important aspect a tutor can do for a student is to further ignite their passion and interest in their subject. No matter how much a tutor can help, but if a student does…

Help them to believe they can do it. Whether its solving a really hard math problem or understanding a scientific concept. Help the student to not necessarily hate the subject but see it as a pathway to help them if not further in life then to help them get through this tough period. I can help make a student feel comfortable in their own skills…

I consider that the most important thing is faith in their students. No matter how dire the situation is, a tutor's faith and belief in their student should not waver. As students are looking to better themselves, a tutor's belief in them is crucial as they look towards their mentor for guidance. This, in addition with a tutor's well researched…

I personally consider the interactive and "adaptive" aspects of being a tutor to be the most important things a tutor can do for their student. In my opinion, keeping the student engaged, such as through mini breaks or games between long sessions of work, is the most effective way of teaching them in a fun, yet informative manner. Moreover, being…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make him/her confident in their own abilities. Children tend to lose confidence in themselves if they achieve low grades, but I want to be able to teach kids in a way where they enjoy learning and also look forward to each session. I plan on doing this by incorporating relatable examples and…

A tutor must possess the skills of raising the subject interest of a student. He must grow a problem solving mindset inside the student and prepare him to be up for challenges. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is GUIDING! NOT teaching to solve a single problem. A good teacher will guide a student to figure out techniques by himself. Because especially in Mathematics, approach to all problems is not the same. It's the teacher's duty to guide the student to figure out the techniques to each…

Inside Narre Warren NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Cat worked on revising positive and negative numbers for confidence-building and practiced converting between decimals and fractions.

Year 11 student Shari focused on rationalising denominators in algebraic expressions and rearranging equations involving inequalities, using classwork questions as examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Dom tackled transformations of quadratics—exploring how parameter changes affect graphs—and deepened understanding by mapping from transformed to original forms with practical graphing exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Biology, one student struggled to keep organized notes during exam revision—"it was difficult without notes, but understandable moving house etc."—which meant extra time spent searching for key concepts instead of practicing questions.

A Year 10 Maths session highlighted confusion with rearranging formulas; after working through examples, progress improved, but initial hesitation slowed problem-solving.

For a Year 5 student, inconsistent number writing ("sometimes she might write 102 when asked to 120") caused mix-ups in multi-step problems.

In Year 7 Algebra, skipping written steps led to missed negative signs and hidden calculation errors.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Narre Warren North noticed that a Year 11 student, Dom, has become much more proactive—she now comes to sessions having already attempted most questions and isn't shy about raising her hand when stuck, rather than guessing or waiting.

Another high schooler, Cat, made a breakthrough with graphing equations: after struggling to visualise x- and y-intercepts last term, she now confidently plots points independently without reminders.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently surprised her tutor by reading the time independently on an analogue clock for the first time during their session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bunjil Place Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Narre Warren North Primary School.
