The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I do not think it is not enough for a tutor to simply talk through the topic with the student and expect them to understand it. A tutor should explain the topic to the student and then, after more study…

I think it would be acknowledging the difficulty in subjects to know that they aren't alone with their difficulties and also being able to explain to them the content of their subjects in new ways that makes sense to them. I think one of the most important things that a tutor can do is to uplift students by reinforcing their own abilities. Therefore, I find by showing the students what their strengths are, this can…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being able to be creative and innovative in teaching so that they will learn in the most effective way. From my perspective, I feel the least and most important thing a tutor can do is to make sure that the student is 100% clear with all the content that is being gone through during the lesson. That is, the student is able to complete similar type of questions with 100% confidence. In order to achieve that, the tutor needs to adjust the pace of…

Inside NathanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jake focused on narrative structure in English and worked through maths revision including multiplication and division.

For Year 9, recent sessions with Dao covered converting units of measurement and practicing number patterns using hands-on examples.

In Year 11, Brandon concentrated on preparing for his IA1 Economics exam by reviewing syllabus dot points and practicing extended response questions aligned to QCAA standards.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Maths, one student struggled to complete assigned homework, with a tutor noting, "He didn't finish the homework I gave," which limited class progress and confidence during new algebra topics.

In Year 11 Economics, another found it hard to structure answers independently; despite guidance, he needed frequent reminders to plan responses clearly under test conditions.

For a Year 6 English task, a student doubted their ability so much they asked for help even when unnecessary—this self-doubt slowed independent writing and made exam preparation stressful.

Gaps in basic skills often led to frustration or avoidance instead of steady practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nathan recently saw a Year 10 student, Brandon, make a noticeable shift: after struggling to organise his economics assignments, he now structures his answers much more clearly and is analysing both texts with real independence.

In Year 7 English, Jake—who used to hesitate with paragraph writing—now writes PESTO paragraphs fluently and can plan out narrative drafts without needing prompting.

Meanwhile, Dao in primary school has begun slowing down on multiplication tasks to reduce mistakes, showing greater care and self-correction than before; last week, he finished an entire worksheet with only one minor error.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Mitch has been so wonderful with Nick and is doing an amazing job tutoring Nick, especially getting Nick focused on completing his maths homework. He has worked with Nick so well and has established a great working relationship with him. His patient demeanor is certainly a strong attribute and has made tutoring for Nick so much easier.  Nick has commented several times that 'he has learnt more with Mitch today than he has all week with his teacher'.

I am delighted with Domenic's tutoring. I was concerned about how the tutoring would go because Jake struggles with a high level of anxiety but Domenic has put him at his ease.  He has engaged very well with my son, and is enthusiastic, encouraging, knowledgable and organised. He explains concepts in a way that Jake can grasp them: Jake has had at least one 'ah-ha' moment in every session. Domenic is also always punctual and polite. He has made a big difference already to Jett's confidence and performance at Maths. I look forward to having him continue to tutor Jake through his HSC.

We are certainly happy and off to a great start. Edward has been great, punctual & helpful. I am confident this  trend will continue and George's math will only improve.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Coopers Plains Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yarranlea Primary School.
