The most important thing would be to help slowly build academic confidence for the student in the subject he/she struggles with, so that eventually he/she would no longer require help in this subject. However, skills like organization, time management, communication and focus can also be taught by a tutor to a student, which is highly essential…

Encouragement is the most important, but it must be coupled with good teaching. My strength would be the ability to convey the information in a form that younger students would be most likely to comprehend. Secondly I believe I have a strong grounding in English, which I think is very important because one must know something very well to teach…

By providing clear explanations, encouragement, and strategies for independent learning, a tutor empowers students to reach their full…

I have experience working with kids in the past informally, through programmes established by my Secondary school. I also am able to connect with the kids I…

I consider the fact that a tutor should provide support for the student instead of expecting top grades all the time. If I can make a student learn and like the subject and process of learning, it is the best gain that I can get from it. I think I explain things in a detailed way and I try not to explicitly give the answer. Instead, I ask the…

Definitely patience. I think its easy for people to think tutoring will be a cakewalk, knowing that you’re well versed in a subject. But having the ability to be able to slow down, and take the time that the student needs is very important I would say that I am: Kind Patient Have the ability to make it…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to develop an organic interest in the subject, where a student, of his own accord, picks up the topic and explores it. Larger goal remains that of the student being able to maximize their potential and develop confidence and self-belief. If a tutor can spark an interest where the…

I think that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student would be to always be there for them when they have questions to ask. This is because with our presence, and once we manage to build a relationship with them, they would not feel that it is embarrassing to ask certain questions, even if they have a wrong answer in mind. In…

It is not to reveal the answer but to guide them through the process of discovering the answer. Give a man a fish he is fed for a day, but teach a man to fish and he is fed for a lifetime. I feel like one of the most common problems I see with fellow University Students is a mental block carried over from their high school days - the preconception that they "simply can't do" particular things or that they're not good enough at a subject to attempt things. As such, I feel like getting rid of these blocks by showing students that even…

To be able to build a personal relationship with the student where the student is comfortable to ask questions as to what they don't understand, and be able to answer them clearly and patiently. Thus the student can understand the concept. A tutor should also be able to prescribe the student effective study strategies and homework the student can…

Not all students learn the same or at the speed so it's important to be patient in teaching at all times. Having empathy to relate with students as well as discipline. Especially discipline, to let students know that you have expectations for them and that they have to do their part whether it being assignments or pre-reading that you give, if they want to get better. I used to struggle in school for certain subjects, and had to have tutors as well.…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can pass onto a student is confidence in that learning area, as confidence can act as a motivator for improvement. Whilst helping a pupil to overcome their challenges is definitely required, I think that providing students with the tools to overcome similar, future problems is far more effective, as…

Inside NedlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sofia worked on identifying and using nouns, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives in English, alongside practicing multiplication tables for 4, 6, 7, 8, and 12.

In Year 8, Chloe focused on understanding isomorphic graphs and adjacency matrices in preparation for an upcoming test.

For Year 10, Daniel tackled Pythagoras' Theorem by finding hypotenuse lengths as well as working through problems requiring calculation of unknown side lengths given the hypotenuse.

Recent Challenges

In recent lessons, a Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework and sometimes brought only answers rather than full working, which made it hard to pinpoint where understanding was lost.

A tutor noted, "He relied on mental maths for division instead of writing steps," leading to repeated errors in basic calculations.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, messy written work during standard deviation questions meant time was wasted hunting for calculation slips instead of focusing on new concepts.

Another senior student skipped practicing harder problems and depended heavily on calculators before attempting questions by hand, especially under exam pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nedlands noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on worded trigonometry questions is now breaking down each part independently and double-checking his steps, which wasn't happening a few weeks ago.

Another recent high school session saw Chloe challenge herself by working through matrices unaided for the first time, showing she's comfortable relying on her own skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with tricky multiplication now openly checks his thinking out loud and requests clarification whenever he's unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
