The most important things a tutor can do for a student is be consistent, positive and a guidance for the student throughout their studies. It is through these attributes that a student can truly benefit from the teachings and have a willingness to learn and understand the concepts taught by the tutor. I am passionate about the subjects I teach, I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is be patient and to never give up on the student. I am patient and am not easy to frustrate. I am also able to communicate concepts in a number of ways until a student is able to understand the…

I believe that one of the most effective parts of tutoring is the repetition of concepts from both the school and the tutor, which helps drill in the point. It's easy to gloss over something if it's only taught once (i.e. just schoolwork), but if it crops up again and again (i.e. from schoolwork + tutoring + homework), then the concept sticks much…

Inside NewportTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Chloe worked on number patterns, including recognising and continuing arithmetic and geometric sequences, as well as exploring triangular numbers by visualising them with diagrams.

Year 8 Liam practised applying the Pythagorean theorem to find unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles and began rearranging equations in algebra.

For Year 10 Ethan, sessions focused on financial mathematics, calculating interest and rates using real-life scenarios, alongside evaluating algebraic expressions for homework assignments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, "she needs to be more careful in writing the correct units for consumer arithmetic problems," as one tutor observed—small details slipped by when rushing through worded tasks.

A Year 10 student hesitated to attempt rearranging equations alone, repeatedly saying "I can't do that" before realising the process was within reach with a nudge.

In senior trigonometry, working without clear diagrams led to confusion about which formula applied; skipping this visual step cost time and confidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner found division questions harder to tackle independently when instructions weren't read fully at first glance.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Newport noticed a Year 8 student who used to guess when stuck now stops and explains her reasoning before attempting each algebra question, showing real initiative.

In Year 11, Chloe was initially hesitant with rearranging equations but, after some joint practice, began solving for unknowns on her own and even made concise edits to her written responses without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously avoided division is now not only eager to tackle new problems but also demonstrates links between multiplication and division by setting out solutions step-by-step during sessions.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Richard is a really lovely young man. He is very patient and good at explaining concepts. He is working really well with Annah and I think even in the 3 weeks we have had so far her understanding and confidence is growing.

Since Diali has started working with Brendan I have seen her motivation to engage in maths skyrocket. Prior, it took a great deal of coaxing to get her to do her homework, let alone to do anything extra relating to maths. Brendan has provided Diali with cause for a notable increase in her enthusiasm, sense of being encouraged, confidence and her incentive to work on her maths. She completes Brendan's assigned homework with enthusiasm (except when she is too tired at the end of the day) and she is practicing her times-tables with less resistance! She is looking forward to her next maths tutorial with Brendan. Brendan has a gentle, helpful and very supportive approach and he relates superwell to children. We are really so happy to have the support of Brendan as Diali's tutor.

We're proud of our son is achieving better results and thanks to a good tutor also who's I believe showing him the way also.
