Ancient History Tutor Lane Cove, NSW
In my opinion, a tutor can act as the bridge between the student and the learning outcome. I feel the job of a tutor is to instill confidence in the child and inculcate a joy of learning the subject. My job as a tutor is to administer lessons to students in such a way to adapt to his capabilities and to meld the subject matter with his interest in…

According to me, a tutor should first of all make the student realise that whatever he is going to teach is not hard but its very easy and try to make the concept simple that students who are weak in studies also understands it quickly. I have a friendly nature and try to make myself always available for my students. Even after clearing the…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student has completely understood the concept. It is useless to move forward if they don't understand the basics. I am able to understand the thought process of a student and their weak points. This allows me to help construct their concepts from the base up and ensure they can solve any…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is wholly believe in their capabilities. If a tutor/ teacher doesn't think that a student can succeed then it's pretty impossible to effectively help. Of course, this goes the other way as it is a tutors responsibility to ensure that the student believes in their own ability to succeed.…

A good tutor should be able to be clearly explain concepts, understand where a student is lacking and focus on those areas, have clear goals academically speaking and lastly, the tutor should be able to build trust and motivation among the students. I would say my strengths as a tutor are good communication skills and patience. Also, I am great at…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them that mistakes are part of learning. It is very easy to become disheartened if something is difficult, but mistakes help us to grow and allow us to see how far we have come once we achieve our work. My strength as a tutor is positive reinforcement as it allows the student to…

Teach obviously! but i think if the tutor can make the lessons as fun as possible so that the student looks forward to them as something enjoyable rather than as purely work, the best results will occur. A great tutor does more than just teach—they empower, guide, and inspire students to reach their full potential. A tutor’s goal isn’t just to help with immediate challenges but to equip students with the skills to solve future problems on their own. Many students, especially women and minorities in STEM, face imposter syndrome. A great tutor…

To reveal the simple nature of (what may seem) complex. Once a student understands that they have the ability to unravel something they thought was out of their reach, their confidence and newfound ability create a framework for smart study skills and eagerness to learn in the future. Those two qualities are necessary for the independent learning…

A tutor is not just only someone who's there to help with homework questions, but more importantly questions outside the classroom. This was something I cherished as a student as I didn't have any role models who could tell me what exam techniques are the best for someone like me or what life is like after HSC, and so on! It's about building a…

Inside NewtownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lily focused on expanding and factorising perfect squares, as well as reviewing non-linear relationships through function graphs.

In Year 10, Sam worked through the turning point of parabolas, x- and y-intercepts, and solved quadratic equations using the quadratic formula with practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex explored the unit circle in depth, covering radian measure, arc length and sector area, plus applications involving negative and complementary angle formulae.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, messy written work in algebra and trigonometry—"works all over the place"—led to lost marks from sign errors and made revision harder later.

For a Year 11 student, reliance on answers during practice ("more practice without looking at answers") limited genuine recall under exam conditions.

A Year 9 student's tendency to avoid explaining working aloud caused confusion when tackling probability questions; as noted, "needs improvement in explaining his working out."

Meanwhile, one primary student's disinterest at lesson start sometimes derailed focus until momentum picked up, leaving key notes incomplete or untidy by session's end.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Newtown noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with exam timing now confidently plans her approach, finishing all sections without rushing or missing marks.

Another high schooler, after previously struggling with advanced geometry questions, has started talking through his problem-solving out loud and now makes minimal errors even on tougher problems.

Meanwhile, an upper primary student who once needed reminders to stay focused completed his maths homework independently this week and planned his own revision for the first time. He finished the session by neatly writing out every calculation step without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newtown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Australia Street Infants School.
